Five people tragically lost their lives in a grisly accident that occurred on Friday night along the Kapsabet-Eldoret highway.
The deadly crash involved a matatu and a school bus at Mutwot market, leaving several others injured.
According to police reports, the public service vehicle, with registration number KDC 136J, was traveling toward Eldoret when it lost control and collided head-on with a school bus from Cheptabach Secondary School.
The bus, carrying residents of Nandi Hills, had been returning from a social event in Uasin Gishu.
Chesumei Sub County Police Commander, Silas Kiokora, confirmed the heartbreaking news that four individuals, including a young infant, died at the scene.
The driver of the matatu, who suffered severe injuries, later succumbed while receiving treatment at Mosoriot Health Center.
“Dozens of passengers from both vehicles were rushed to various hospitals in Nandi and Uasin Gishu for emergency treatment. Many sustained minor injuries and have since been discharged,” Kiokora reported.
One of the victims, Gilbert Maiyo, who was aboard the bus, described the horrifying events.
He recounted that the matatu, which shuttles between Kisii and Eldoret, was speeding uncontrollably before skidding off its lane and crashing into the bus.
Maiyo also reported that the violent impact ejected a female infant from the bus, causing her death instantly.
He further suggested that the matatu driver may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident.
The police have impounded both vehicles and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the morgue in Kapsabet, awaiting identification and family arrangements for burial.
As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of loved ones in this devastating incident.
