St. Joseph Church Milimani Unveils New Look After 120 Years

St. Joseph Catholic Church Milimani, one of the oldest and most revered churches in Kenya, has reopened its doors to the Sunday congregation after undergoing an expansive renovation.

The church, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary, marked the occasion with a grand reopening on December 8, 2024.

The newly renovated church building was consecrated the day before, on December 7, by Bishop Maurice Muhatia of Kisumu.

The consecration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili.

The event also featured prayers and blessings as the faithful gathered to witness the completion of the renovation work.

St. Joseph Catholic Church Milimani holds significant historical importance. Originally founded in 1904, the church moved to its current location in Milimani in 1957, where it has served as a central place of worship for thousands of Catholics.

This latest renovation marks the second major expansion of the building, with the first major upgrade taking place in 2000.

The renovations have enhanced the church’s capacity, ensuring it continues to serve the growing Catholic community in Kisumu and beyond.

Speaking during the consecration ceremony, Bishop Muhatia emphasized the church’s importance as a beacon of faith and community in Kisumu.

He noted that the building, though renovated, remains a testament to the enduring spirit of faith that has defined the parish for over a century.

The renovation was crucial to accommodate the increasing number of worshippers, with the church now offering a modern and spacious environment for its Sunday services and various activities.

This expansion is expected to further strengthen the church’s role in the local community.

The reopening and consecration of the church have been celebrated by both the parishioners and the broader Kisumu community.

As the church steps into its 120th year, it continues to play a vital role in the spiritual life of the region, with a legacy that blends tradition and modernity in its vibrant ministry.
