Gachagua Urges Govt to Embrace Public Criticism and Tolerate Dissent

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on government officials to show more tolerance toward differing opinions from Kenyans, urging them not to dismiss or lecture citizens when they voice concerns about national issues.

Speaking during a Sunday service at PCEA Church in Mwiki, Kasarani, Gachagua emphasized that the government should listen to the people it serves and be responsive to their needs rather than criticizing them.

“Kenyans are the ones who elected you. If they say something is wrong, do not lecture them,” Gachagua remarked.

“Instead, engage with their concerns and align the government’s actions accordingly.”

His comments come amid rising tensions following remarks by government officials, including President William Ruto, who recently called on Kenyans to exercise restraint in their criticism of the government.

Ruto and other leaders like Mining CS Hassan Joho have advocated for patriotism and support for government initiatives, asking the public to focus on national development.

Gachagua, however, warned that it is vital for the government to be receptive to public opinions.

“We cannot ignore the voice of the people. They are the heartbeat of the nation, and their views matter. If we dismiss them, we lose sight of what truly matters for Kenya’s future.”

After the church service, Gachagua, who was joined by several political leaders including Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, Nyandarua Senator John Methu, and various Members of Parliament, took time to engage with the local community in Mwiki.

He acknowledged their concerns about the state of the economy and promised to continue advocating for policies that reflect the interests of ordinary Kenyans.

He also drew on scripture to inspire both churchgoers and leaders, quoting from 2 Peter 2:18-19 to remind those in leadership of the importance of integrity and service to the people.

“The church is the foundation of a strong family and society,” Gachagua added, encouraging the Christian community to remain firm and united in its support for the nation.
