Sh600M Gone Missing: EACC Busts Top Turkana Officials with Millions Hidden in a Car

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Thursday recovered Sh6.5 million in cash hidden inside a vehicle linked to a senior Turkana County official.

The discovery was made during synchronized raids on homes and offices of top county administrators, as part of an ongoing investigation into the suspected misappropriation of over Sh600 million in public funds.

In statement by the EACC confirmed that at least ten high-ranking officials, including a county executive committee member and several chief officers, are under scrutiny for their alleged roles in siphoning county funds through shady procurement deals and abuse of office.

“The search operation has provided significant leads. We recovered Sh6.5 million in cash suspected to be proceeds of corruption. The money was found concealed in a vehicle belonging to one of the suspects,” said EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud in a statement.

The commission revealed that the suspected embezzlement took place over two financial years 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 through irregular tenders awarded to companies with ties to county insiders.

According, to the anti-graft agency the latest breakthrough follows a March 3,2025 operation where EACC froze Sh180 million held in bank accounts registered under a security guard believed to be a proxy for powerful county figures.

Investigators believe the frozen funds are part of the larger loot.

“Preliminary findings indicate widespread abuse of procurement processes and blatant conflict of interest. Several companies linked to public officials were paid over Sh600 million for questionable supply of goods and services,” Mohamud stated.

The suspects have since been summoned to appear before EACC officers in Lodwar to record statements.

The agency says more arrests and asset seizures could follow as the investigation widens.
