Security Intensified in Nyeri County Ahead of Public Participation on Deputy President Gachagua’s Impeachment

On Thursday, Nyeri County witnessed heightened security measures as the region braced for Friday’s public participation concerning the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Armed anti-riot police officers patrolled key areas, including Othaya and Karatina, monitoring potential unrest while ensuring the safety of local banks and businesses.

The residence of Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, located on the outskirts of Karatina, remained under round-the-clock police protection following reports that he voted in favor of Gachagua’s impeachment.

This area is considered a stronghold for the Deputy President, and tensions have escalated since the announcement of the motion.

Local sentiment reflects a deep sense of betrayal among residents who had previously supported Gachagua during his tenure as their MP from 2013 to 2017.

Many feel let down by Wamumbi’s decision, viewing it as a disservice to a leader who had once dedicated himself to their welfare.

Milka Gathoni, a tomato trader at Chaka Market, expressed her dismay, questioning the motives of President William Ruto.

“How can a God-fearing man act against the will of both God and the people by turning against his deputy, who stood with him in difficult times?” she lamented.

Security forces have been particularly vigilant in Nyeri Town, where a contingent was stationed outside Chieni Supermarket.

This location was previously targeted during protests on June 25, when looters stole goods worth millions, prompting renewed concerns about public safety.

As the situation unfolds, the county remains on high alert, anticipating potential demonstrations as residents prepare to voice their opinions on the controversial motion against a local figure who once held their trust and support.
