Former East Wanga Ward MCA Zaid Shaban Oteng’o was on Friday arraigned before a Nairobi court, facing serious charges of fraudulently obtaining Sh 16.7 million from businessman Mohamoud Zaid Suleiman.
Appearing before Magistrate Gilbert Shikwe, Oteng’o denied the allegations, which stem from events occurring between August 2016 and November 2018.
The prosecution claims that Oteng’o manipulated and influenced Suleiman into making these payments under false pretenses.
During the court proceedings, Oteng’o asserted that the charges against him were politically motivated, suggesting that they were part of a broader scheme to tarnish his reputation.
He requested the court to consider his long-standing position as a public officer when determining bail, arguing that he is not a flight risk.
After considering his plea, the court set his bond at Sh 2 million, with an alternative cash bail option of Sh 700,000.
Oteng’o is expected to return to court for further hearings as the case within 14 days.
