George Oduor, Raila Odinga’s Trusted Bodyguard, Dies

George Oduor, a dedicated bodyguard and trusted aide to ODM leader Raila Odinga, has passed away after a short illness.

Oduor passed away on Wednesday evening, April 2, 2025,  at the Nairobi West Hospital where he had been receiving treatment for two weeks.

The news of his death broke late this evening leaving many in the political and security circles in shock and mourning.

Oduor was not just a bodyguard to Raila Odinga, but a loyal and trusted figure in the Odinga family.

His role extended beyond security, as he also provided invaluable guidance and mentorship to those close to the ODM leader.

Many, including political figures, have paid tribute to Oduor, acknowledging his selfless dedication to his work and his brotherly presence.

Robert Alai, a Member of the Nairobi County Assembly and close associate of Raila Odinga, expressed his grief on social media, writing, “Rest In Peace my brother. I will miss your wise counsel and guidance. You were more than an aide to Baba. You offered to us brotherly advice and sought to mentor us.”

ODM Communications Director, Philip Etale, also mourned the loss, saying, “This is one man who stood by me at all costs. I have lost a friend. Big bro. Rest easy George. Wah!”

On the other hand, United Green Movement (UGM) party co-leader Neto Agostinho recalled his past interactions with Oduor.

“Rest you in peace, George Oduor. Loyalty as it comes. Met him in 1984 in the tenement where we lived in Homabay. He was together with a group who had been sent away from the military in the 1982 coup. Our paths reconnected when I worked for the Constant Gardiner Trust in Kibera.

“He was to be a key support system in my by-election engagement in the ODM nomination of September 2012. He remained invaluable in my entire period as an MP in the ODM Party. Dependable. Loyal and all those virtues you need in an Aide. My Condolences to Raila Odinga and the ODM party fraternity,” he said.

Oduor’s reputation was built on years of unwavering service to the Odinga family, particularly his work with Raila Odinga’s wife, Ida Odinga.

He was known for his professionalism, loyalty, and devotion to duty, and his passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill.

His death has sent ripples of sadness across the political landscape, with many remembering him for his humility, wisdom, and strength.

As the country processes this loss, tributes continue to pour in for a man who was far more than just a bodyguard he was a protector, a mentor, and a friend.

Details regarding funeral arrangements and further tributes are expected in the coming days.
