Wildlife Traffickers Busted, Rhino Horn Worth Sh2.9 Million Seized

In a major breakthrough in the fight against wildlife trafficking, detectives from the Homabay Police Station, working alongside Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers from Ruma National Park, have arrested three individuals and seized a rhino horn worth an estimated Sh2.9 million.

The arrests on Thursday January 2,2025 followed a tip-off that led the law enforcement team to Rodi Market in Homabay Sub-County, where they found the suspects in possession of the contraband.

The traffickers namely Benard Omondi Sunga, a member of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), along with his associates George Oloo and Argwings Watta were apprehended while traveling in a black Kluger, registration number KBM 463G.

A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered a 2.9 kg rhino horn hidden inside, confirming the criminals’ involvement in illegal wildlife trade.

The horn, prized for its black market value, was swiftly confiscated.

The suspects have been preferred criminal charges and are set to appear in court.

This operation underscores the commitment of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and KWS to combat wildlife crime, a growing issue that threatens Kenya’s natural heritage.

The seizure marks a significant victory in protecting endangered species, with authorities pledging continued vigilance in their fight against poaching and trafficking.

The public’s role in providing intelligence has been crucial in enabling such successes, and law enforcement continues to urge citizens to report any suspicious activities related to wildlife crime.
