Speaker Wetang’ula Meets Former Nigerian President Obasanjo to Discuss DRC-Rwanda Peace Efforts

National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula held a high-level meeting on Thursday morning with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to discuss peace efforts in the East African region.

The impromptu consultative engagement focused on the ongoing mediation process between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Rwanda.

The talks are part of a broader effort to resolve long-standing tensions and violence between the two nations, particularly in the eastern DRC region, which has been plagued by armed conflict for years.

Obasanjo, a key figure in African diplomacy, is one of three eminent statesmen leading the peace initiative in the Great Lakes region.

Along with former Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Obasanjo has been working tirelessly to mediate the conflict.

The discussions between Wetang’ula and Obasanjo underscored the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation to end hostilities and establish a stable and peaceful environment in the region.

The talks covered a range of critical issues, including the need for a ceasefire between the DRC and Rwanda, the delivery of humanitarian aid to affected areas, and the stabilization of regions heavily impacted by conflict.

Wetang’ula and Obasanjo also discussed ways to bolster the regional peace process and ensure that the mediation efforts are effective and sustainable.

The meeting reflected Kenya’s strong commitment to supporting peace initiatives in the region and underscored the country’s role in regional diplomacy.

As the mediation process continues, both leaders reiterated their support for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

They highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach that involves both regional and international stakeholders, as well as the need for concrete actions to address the humanitarian crisis and promote long-term stability in the Great Lakes region.

The collaborative efforts of these prominent African leaders are seen as crucial in driving the peace process forward and restoring hope for a peaceful future in the DRC and its neighboring countries.

Through this engagement, Wetang’ula and Obasanjo have demonstrated their shared commitment to fostering peace and security in East Africa, a region that has long been affected by conflict.

Their leadership and determination serve as an example of the power of diplomacy and cooperation in resolving even the most complex regional crises.
