President Ruto Flies to Uganda for African Union Summit on Agricultural Transformation

President William Ruto embarked on a significant diplomatic journey on the morning of January 11, traveling to Uganda to participate in the African Union (AU) Extraordinary Summit focused on the Post-Malabo Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).

The summit, which seeks to address Africa’s most pressing issues of hunger and poverty, aims to implement agriculture-driven policies that will lay the foundation for long-term economic growth across the continent.

In a statement released by State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, it was emphasized that this one-day visit will be a pivotal moment for President Ruto to demonstrate Kenya’s ongoing efforts to boost food security and alleviate poverty.

Central to his mission will be showcasing Kenya’s initiatives to foster job creation and sustainable growth through agricultural transformation.

The summit’s agenda aligns closely with President Ruto’s ambitious Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to empower ordinary Kenyans by stimulating inclusive economic progress.

The Head of State is expected to emphasize how CAADP’s goals resonate with Kenya’s Vision 2030, underlining the country’s commitment to agricultural reform as a cornerstone of its economic future.

A key focus of the gathering will be the evaluation of progress towards achieving the targets set in the Malabo Declaration, with the ultimate goal of adopting the Kampala Declaration.

This declaration will guide the transformation of Africa’s agri-food systems from 2026 to 2035, ensuring that agriculture remains a critical driver of growth and food security across the continent.

In addition to his participation in the summit’s deliberations, President Ruto will meet with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and other African leaders to strengthen bilateral relations and garner support for Kenya’s role in championing AU reforms.

These discussions are expected to focus on regional cooperation and mutual support in addressing both agricultural and economic challenges facing East Africa and the broader continent.
