A child theft suspect, Mary Akinyi Mulamula, has been arrested by a joint team from the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Protection Unit and detectives from DCI Kabete.
The operation, which led to the capture of the suspect and the rescue of two victims, marks a significant victory in the fight against child trafficking.
The arrest stems from a report filed after a child was abducted from her home in Muchingu, Mukango Sub-Location, Virhembe Location, Kakamega County, on June 6, 2024.
On that day, Mulamula deceived a local shamba boy by claiming she was taking the child to Kakamega for registration in a sponsorship program that promised a monthly stipend of Sh9,000.
Trusting her story, the boy allowed her to take the child, not realizing the danger that lurked.
Once the child was in her possession, Mulamula vanished, leaving the family distraught and desperate for answers.
The incident prompted a swift and determined investigation by law enforcement, who worked tirelessly to track down the suspect.
Through diligent efforts, the DCI was able to locate Mulamula in Kabete, where she was apprehended.
In the process, officers successfully rescued the abducted child as well as another victim, whose circumstances are still being investigated.
Mulamula is currently in police custody, where she awaits prosecution.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has emphasized its commitment to protecting children’s rights and tackling the pervasive issue of human trafficking.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could involve child abduction or trafficking.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced in safeguarding vulnerable children, but also demonstrates the effectiveness of collaborative efforts among law enforcement agencies in addressing such crimes
The DCI is resolute in its mission to ensure justice for victims and to prevent future incidents of child theft.
