KMPDU Accuses Kwale County of Hiring Goons to Disrupt Doctors’ Protest

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Coast branch has strongly condemned the Kwale County government for allegedly hiring goons to disrupt a peaceful doctors’ protest at Msambweni County Referral Hospital.

Led by KMPDU Coast Chairman Dr. Niko Kimanga Gichana and Organizing Secretary Stephen Walunywa, the union said the county’s actions were a blatant attempt to intimidate health workers who are demanding better working conditions.

The protest, held Tuesday morning, was part of ongoing industrial action by doctors stationed at the hospital. Dr. Milaki Boy Juma, a pathologist at the facility, revealed that 18 doctors are working under deplorable conditions, citing lack of basic medical supplies, staff shortages, and poor infrastructure.

The union leaders accused Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani of turning a blind eye to their grievances, despite repeated appeals for intervention.

“Instead of addressing the doctors’ concerns, the county government opted for intimidation and chaos. We will not be silenced,” said Dr. Gichana.

The union has vowed to escalate its push for reform if the county fails to engage in constructive dialogue.

The incident comes amid growing unrest among healthcare workers across the country, who are calling for improved staffing, remuneration, and working conditions.
