EACC Nabs Five Busia Traffic Officers in Highway Bribery Crackdown

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested five traffic police officers accused of running a bribery racket along the Kisumu–Busia highway, in a sting operation that has lifted the lid on rampant extortion of motorists at roadblocks.

The officers, Corporal Hezron Aburi, Corporal Mary Nabei, Police Constable James Weru, Police Constable Mwakwekwe Nyoka, and Police Constable Aisha Abdullahi, were nabbed at a checkpoint barely five kilometres from Busia town after investigators allegedly caught them soliciting and collecting bribes from motorists.

According to EACC, the arrests followed weeks of surveillance triggered by numerous complaints from road users who claimed the officers routinely demanded cash from motorists entering or leaving the border town, often without inspecting vehicles or enforcing traffic laws.

“They were found demanding and receiving bribes from motorists at the checkpoint. This operation is part of our wider crackdown on corruption in public service delivery points,” the Commission said in a statement.

The five were escorted to the EACC Western Regional Office in Bungoma, where they recorded statements before being booked at Bungoma Police Station for further processing.

EACC said the latest operation underscores its renewed resolve to root out bribery in high-risk sectors, including transport, health, and licensing services.

The agency has vowed to intensify intelligence-led operations to ensure Kenyans receive services without harassment or extortion.
