Ex-Tottenham and Celtic Midfielder Victor Wanyama Joins Dunfermline Athletic

Victor Wanyama, the former Harambee Stars captain and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, has completed a surprising return to Scottish football by signing a short-term contract with Dunfermline Athletic until the end of the season.

The 33-year-old Kenyan international reunites with former manager Neil Lennon, with whom he achieved significant success during their time at Celtic.

Wanyama’s arrival at East End Park comes after a distinguished career that has seen him play for top clubs across Europe and North America.

He began his European journey with Beerschot in Belgium before moving to Celtic in 2011.

At Celtic, he won consecutive Scottish Premier League titles and gained international recognition for his performances, including a memorable goal in a Champions League victory over Barcelona.

In 2013, he signed for Southampton in the English Premier League for a then-record fee of £12.5 million.

Wanyama later joined Tottenham Hotspur, where he played a pivotal role in their midfield and reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2019.

In 2020, he moved to CF Montreal in Major League Soccer, where he played until January 2025.

Dunfermline Athletic, currently positioned second-bottom in the Scottish Championship, are battling to avoid relegation.

Wanyama’s experience and leadership are expected to bolster the team’s efforts in the remaining seven games of the season.

His potential debut could come against Ayr United on March 29, where he might face former Celtic teammate Scott Brown, now Ayr’s head coach.

Neil Lennon expressed enthusiasm about the challenges ahead with Dunfermline, acknowledging the task of turning the team’s fortunes around.

He noted the positive response from players since his arrival and is eager to harness their potential to climb up the league standings.

Fans have reacted with a mix of surprise and excitement to Wanyama’s move, with many taking to social media to express their thoughts.

The signing is seen as a significant boost for Dunfermline, offering hope for improved performances and a push away from the relegation zone in the season’s final stretch.
