Jubilation swept across Turkana this week as the Turkana Professionals’ Association celebrated what they termed a “historic and transformative” nomination of Erastus Ethekon as the next chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In a statement released during a press briefing in Lodwar, the association, led by Chairman Jackson Nakusa, applauded President William Ruto for nominating Ethekon, describing it as a bold step towards inclusive governance and national cohesion.
“This nomination is not just a personal triumph for Mr. Ethekon, but a loud national statement on inclusivity, fairness, and equal opportunity in public service,” said Nakusa.
“It is a moment of pride not only for Turkana, but for all historically marginalized communities across Kenya.”
Ethekon, a respected governance expert and election specialist, was nominated alongside six others to form the new-look IEBC, pending vetting and approval by Parliament. If approved, he will become the first Turkana to lead the electoral commission a symbolic milestone for the county long sidelined in national appointments.
Mary Ekutan, Secretary General of the Turkana-based women’s professional group Echami Aito, hailed the nomination as validation of the county’s intellectual and leadership potential.
“For years, Turkana has been stereotyped and underrepresented. This nomination is proof that we have the brains and the capacity to serve at the highest levels,” Ekutan declared.
“It also reflects a shift in political thinking—one that values unity in diversity.”
She credited both President Ruto and bipartisan leaders, including Raila Odinga, for supporting inclusion in national leadership, citing the recent appointment of Beatrice Askul as Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, ASALs, and Regional Development as another win for the region.
Veteran Turkana politician and former civic leader Lazarus Echakan described the moment as “symbolic, powerful, and overdue,” praising Ethekon’s nomination as a message to young professionals from remote counties.
“Ethekon’s rise proves that even from the furthest corners of this country, excellence and competence can shine through,” Echakan stated.
Cabinet Secretary Beatrice Askul and Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai joined in congratulating Ethekon, commending the president for the bold choice and urging Parliament to swiftly approve the nominations.
“This is a proud moment for Turkana. Let us rally behind Ethekon and ensure he takes office to serve the country with fairness and professionalism,” Lomorukai urged.
As the IEBC prepares for a new chapter under fresh leadership, the team of nominees Ethekon, Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Mukwana, Mary Karen Soroboit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah is expected to steer crucial electoral reforms and oversee upcoming elections.
The Turkana Professionals’ Association concluded their statement with a passionate call for Parliament to rise above political divisions and prioritize integrity and inclusion during the vetting process.
“This is not just about Turkana. It’s about what kind of Kenya we want to build one where every citizen has a chance to lead,” said Nakusa.
