A somber mood hangs over Narok County following the sudden death of Narok Traffic Base Commander, Kipchumba Rotich, who perished in a grisly road accident late Saturday night.
The fatal crash occurred around midnight near the Maltauro construction zone, a notorious black spot along the busy Narok–Mai Mahiu highway, confirmed Narok County Police Commander Riko Ngare.
“Commander Rotich’s vehicle collided head-on with a lorry. He died on the spot,” Ngare said in an early morning press briefing.
“A woman who was with him survived but sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment at Narok County Referral Hospital.”
The crash comes just hours before a scheduled police ceremony that was to see the formal reassignment of 16 traffic officers from Narok to strategic posts across Kenya.
Commander Rotich had been central to organizing the event, intended as a send-off and celebration of service.
“He was a pillar in the traffic unit,” said Ngare. “We had planned a formal handover on Sunday afternoon. Now, we are planning a memorial.”
Several passengers in the lorry involved were also seriously injured and rushed to hospital.
While investigations are ongoing, preliminary reports suggest poor visibility and high speed may have contributed to the crash.
Local leaders have expressed their condolences, calling Rotich a dedicated officer who upheld road safety standards and integrity in service.
“His passing is not just a blow to the police service but to the entire Narok community,” said Narok East MP Lemiso Kenta, who visited the hospital Sunday morning.
“This black spot has claimed too many lives, we must now act decisively.”
Commander Ngare urged drivers to take extra care.
“We are losing too many people. It’s time for better enforcement, proper signage, and stricter vehicle inspections,” he said.
The body of Commander Rotich has been taken to Narok County Mortuary, as family, colleagues, and the larger law enforcement community prepare to lay to rest one of their own, a man many described as “firm, fair, and fiercely committed to duty.”
