Daniel Waithaka Mwangi, the former Governor of Nyandarua County, has been convicted of procurement violations involving over Ksh50 million consultancy services scandal
On Thursday, March 13, 2025, the Nyahururu Anti-Corruption Court ruled against Waithaka and his former County Executive Committee Member for Water, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources, Grace Wanjiru Gitonga were guilty on multiple charges related to unlawful procurement practices.
This is after finding that the Prosecution evidence adduced in court proved beyond reasonable doubt the corruption charges against the former governor and his co-accused person.
The court consequently convicted him and Wanjiru on the offenses of breaching public procurement laws and abuse of office.
In it’s decision, the court found that the two had breached the Public Procurement and Disposal Act, 2006, when they awarded a contract to a consulting engineering company in 2014 without the necessary procurement plan for the fiscal year.
This move not only violated the legal procurement framework but also resulted in the improper awarding of a contract for the County’s Water Master Plan and sewerage system design review.
Further investigations revealed that Waithaka used his office to unlawfully confer a benefit to the company, a clear case of office misuse.
The scandal, which centered around the lack of transparency and accountability in handling public funds, left residents questioning the management of county resources during his tenure.
In the court judgement, it has became clear that this was not just a matter of negligence but deliberate disregard for the law, putting public funds at risk.
Both Waithaka and Gitonga now be sentenced on March 20 pending mitigation.
This conviction follows comes days after last month former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu was sentenced to 12 years in prison for tender irregularities.
