Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has affirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to economic transformation through the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), stating that real progress is being made to uplift millions of Kenyans from the base of the economic pyramid.
Speaking in Kigumo on Friday, Murang’a County, during the Constituency’s Economic Empowerment Programme, DP Kindiki highlighted how BETA’s agricultural and grassroots reforms are already yielding tangible results for farmers and small-scale traders.
“We are making significant progress in the implementation of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda to increase household incomes for the vast majority of our citizens at the bottom of the economic pyramid,” the Deputy President said.
Kindiki pointed to major achievements in the agricultural sector, where subsidised fertiliser, a crackdown on cartels, and revitalised cooperative societies have led to record earnings for farmers.
He noted that coffee prices have surged to between Ksh.110 and Ksh.148 per kilogram this season, the highest in 35 years.
“These reforms are not abstract. They are increasing incomes, restoring dignity, and empowering farming communities across Kenya,” he added.
In efforts to boost small-scale businesses, the Government is constructing 400 modern markets across all 290 constituencies to support informal traders, including Mama Mboga, hawkers, and Boda Boda riders.
Murang’a County is currently home to 15 markets under construction, with 12 more planned.
“The daily hustle of our small-scale traders must be dignified. These markets will provide safe, structured and clean working spaces that empower traders economically and socially,” the DP stated.
Electricity expansion also featured prominently in Kindiki’s remarks.
He announced that the Government will invest Ksh.1.1 billion to connect 16,000 new households to the national power grid in Murang’a County, with Kigumo Constituency alone receiving Ksh.122 million worth of new connections.
“Access to electricity is a catalyst for education, enterprise and economic mobility. Every household we connect moves Kenya closer to equitable growth,” he said.
The Deputy President also praised the Kigumo Economic Empowerment Programme, which is supporting local women and youth groups through targeted initiatives, capacity building, and funding.
A host of leaders accompanied the DP, including MPs Betty Maina (Murang’a Woman Rep), Mary Wamaua (Maragua), Edwin Mugo (Mathioya), Sabina Chege (Nominated), Ann Muratha (Kiambu Woman Rep), Wahome Wamatinga (Senator, Nyeri), Eric Wamumbi (Mathira), and Florence Jematiah (Baringo Woman Rep). Members of the Murang’a County Assembly (MCAs) and other grassroots leaders were also in attendance.
Also present were Principal Secretaries Elijah Mwangi (Sports), Alex Wachira (Energy), Betsy Njagi (Fisheries), Mary Muthoni (Public Health), Ann Wang’ombe (Gender), along with Senior Presidential Advisor on Economy Moses Kuria.
