Court Issues Warrant of Arrest for Activist Boniface Mwangi Over Assault on Two Police Officers

A Kibera court has issued an arrest warrant for prominent activist Boniface Mwangi after he failed to appear in court for plea-taking in a case involving alleged assault.

Mwangi was expected to attend court on Thursday, where he was scheduled to respond to charges linked to an alleged violent incident, but his absence prompted the magistrate to take immediate action.

The prosecution informed the court of Mwangi’s failure to show up, which led to the court’s decision to issue a warrant for his arrest.

According to the charge sheet, the activist is accused of willfully and unlawfully assaulting two police officers during an incident on April 2, 2025, at the Metropolitan Court in Kilimani, Nairobi.

Mwangi faces accusations of assaulting Osman Omar, a police officer who was executing his duties.

The prosecution alleges that Mwangi used abusive language toward Officer Omar with the intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

This confrontation is believed to have escalated into a physical altercation, leading to the charges.

In a separate but related count, Mwangi is also accused of assaulting Robert Oyola, another police officer present at the scene.

The charge states that Officer Oyola was also performing his official duties when the alleged assault took place, resulting in actual bodily harm.

The events unfolded in the context of a broader altercation that took place in the busy area of Kilimani, within Dagoretti Sub-County.

Both officers were reportedly carrying out their duties at the time, with Mwangi allegedly confronting them in a manner that resulted in physical harm and disrupted the proceedings.

The charge sheet reads: “On April 2, 2025, at the same location, Mwangi willfully and unlawfully assaulted No. 87673 PC Robert Oyola, a police officer performing his duties, occasioning him actual bodily harm.”

Despite being summoned for his plea-taking, Mwangi’s absence on Thursday led to the court’s decision to issue a warrant of arrest.

The court, in its ruling, emphasized the seriousness of the charges against Mwangi and the need for him to face the judicial process.

The magistrate who is overseeing the case directed that the matter be mentioned again on July 14, 2025.
