Two suspects have been arrested in connection with railway infrastructure vandalism in Lugari Sub-county following a coordinated operation by officers from Bungoma Railways, Kipkaren Railways patrol base, and the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) security unit.
The arrests were made during a joint intelligence-led raid led by Inspector Joseph Muchele, targeting the home of one of the suspects, Geoffrey Kiprotich, 35. Officers recovered 65 pandrol clips, vital components used to fasten railway tracks, concealed inside his residence.
“We acted on credible intelligence and successfully recovered the vandalized railway materials,” said Inspector Muchele.
“This is part of a broader crackdown on individuals sabotaging critical transport infrastructure.”
Upon interrogation, Kiprotich identified his alleged accomplice as Nicholas Macharia, 60, a resident of the Mwamba area in Lugari.
According to Kiprotich, Macharia was responsible for transporting the stolen materials to an undisclosed dealer.
“Following the lead provided, our officers proceeded to Macharia’s home, where he was apprehended without incident,” Inspector Muchele confirmed.
Both suspects are currently being held at Bungoma Central Police Station and are expected to be arraigned in court.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to identify the final recipient of the stolen infrastructure and recover any remaining materials.
Kenya Railways Corporation has since issued a stern warning to members of the public against engaging in vandalism.
“Railway vandalism is a serious offense under Kenyan law. We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice,” said a KRC spokesperson.
“Let this be a warning, we will not relent in protecting our national assets.”
