A Nakuru resident, Evans Kimori, has formally requested U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene in the matter of Governor Susan Kihika’s extended stay in the United States, urging for her deportation back to Kenya.
Kimori, in a letter addressed to President Trump and copied to Kenyan President William Ruto, expressed concerns about Kihika’s prolonged absence and its negative impact on Nakuru County.
He stated that the people of Nakuru deserve accountable leadership and that the governor’s failure to return has led to significant neglect of essential services.
“I request, on behalf of the residents of Nakuru, that you assist in ensuring her swift return to resume her constitutional duties. Her prolonged stay in the U.S. has compromised the services that our people rely on,” Kimori wrote.
Kimori’s letter emphasized the urgency of Kihika’s return, citing the dire situation at the War Memorial Hospital, which recently shut its doors, leaving thousands of residents without vital healthcare.
He also highlighted the deteriorating public services across the county in her absence, which he claims amounts to a clear neglect of duty.
“It is unacceptable that a governor receiving a substantial salary is absent while services critical to the people of Nakuru are crumbling,” Kimori added.
Despite no response from either President Trump or President Ruto at the time of publication, Kimori’s letter has sparked debate across social media platforms, with many residents rallying behind his call for accountability.
Meanwhile, Governor Kihika, who has remained in the U.S. for several weeks, has been sharing updates on her social media, showcasing ongoing development projects in Nakuru.
Among the progress she highlighted was the completion of road and water connectivity works aimed at boosting infrastructure and climate resilience.
However, Kihika has not provided clarity on her reasons for staying in the U.S., nor has she offered any insights into her personal situation, despite rumors circulating online.
On March 11, 2025, her casual meeting with politician Milicent Omanga sparked further speculation about the nature of her stay.
In a statement shared on her official page, Kihika emphasized the county’s continued commitment to development, saying, “We have made strides in improving our water access and addressing climate challenges through the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Program.”
But questions remain about the governor’s direct involvement in overseeing these initiatives while based abroad.
