Government Disburses Ksh. 3.32 Billion for University Students’ Upkeep

In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on university students, the Government has released a total of Ksh. 3.32 billion for the upkeep of First and Second-Year students under the 2024/2025 Academic Year.

The disbursement was made through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) by January 31, 2025.

The funds, which are designed to cover students’ living expenses, have been allocated in amounts ranging between Ksh. 40,000 and Ksh. 60,000 per student.

These loans are seen as a vital support mechanism for ensuring that students can focus on their studies without being distracted by financial challenges.

“This disbursement is part of the Government’s commitment to ensuring that students continue their education with the necessary resources for their upkeep,” said Julius Migos Ogamba, Cabinet Secretary for Education.

“We understand the financial pressure students face, and these loans are a critical part of our strategy to enhance student welfare and access to higher education.”

The Ksh. 3.32 billion was already allocated in July 2024 as part of the current financial year’s budget, further affirming the Government’s continued focus on the development of education and human capital.

The timely release of these funds follows several months of careful budget planning and is set to ease the financial strain on thousands of students across the country.

“We are grateful for the Government’s support,” said Grace Wambui, a second-year student at the University of Nairobi.

“This loan will greatly help us cover our daily expenses, allowing us to focus more on our studies rather than worrying about rent or food.”

The disbursement marks a critical point in Kenya’s ongoing efforts to expand access to higher education, with many students now benefiting from more reliable financial support during their university journey.

The Government’s intervention, particularly in these challenging times, underlines the importance of education in driving the nation’s growth and development, and it demonstrates a forward-looking approach to supporting Kenya’s youth in achieving academic success.
