Former Chief Justice David Maraga has raised his voice in condemnation of the recent surge in abductions and killings of young Kenyans, urging the nation to unite in the fight against this growing crisis.
In a powerful statement issued on Friday, January 31, 2025,Maraga extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of Martin Mwau and Justus Musyimi, two of the victims of the tragic Mlolongo abductions that took place on December 17, 2024.
Maraga’s comments come as the bodies of Mwau and Musyimi were identified at the Nairobi Funeral Home (formerly City Mortuary).
Justus Mutumwa’s body, which had been retrieved from a sewer in Ruai on December 18, was confirmed through fingerprint analysis on January 30, 2025. Similarly, Martin Mwau’s remains were also identified at the mortuary.
The identification of the two men is a somber moment for their families, who had been left in agonizing uncertainty since the abduction.
Two more individuals, Steve Mbisi and Karani Muema, remain missing, with their families anxiously awaiting confirmation.
Authorities have indicated that bodies matching their descriptions are at the mortuary, though the condition of the remains is reportedly deteriorated.
Maraga’s comments have reignited national concern over the safety of young people in Kenya.
He denounced the violence as a betrayal of the nation’s future, calling it a direct assault on the values enshrined in the Constitution.
He emphasized that the continued targeting of young Kenyans not only tarnishes the country’s moral fabric but also undermines the rule of law.
The former Chief Justice is calling for a collective stand to address these heinous acts, urging all sectors of society—including the government, law enforcement, and citizens—to come together and take decisive action.
Maraga warned that the abductions and killings are a grave reminder of the urgent need for justice and accountability.
“These acts are a stain on our conscience as a nation,” Maraga said.
“We must hold those responsible accountable and ensure that no more lives are lost to such senseless violence. The future of our nation depends on it.”
