Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, accompanied by Mbeere North Member of Parliament Geoffrey Ruku on Wednesday conducted an inspection of the Kanyuambora Irrigation Project in Embu County’s Mbeere North Constituency.
The project, currently 30% complete, aims to enhance agricultural productivity in the region.
The Kanyuambora Irrigation Project is designed to harness water from the Thuci River to irrigate 1,000 acres, benefiting approximately 1,250 farmers.
Key components of the project include the construction of an intake structure, an 8.6 km conveyance system, a 14.9 km mainline, sub-mains, and a comprehensive distribution system.
The irrigated land is intended to support various crops, such as cereals, pulses, coffee, bananas, and Napier grass for livestock fodder.
The project is expected to create 3,125 direct jobs and 6,250 indirect jobs, significantly contributing to food security and economic development in the area.
During the inspection, Deputy President Kindiki expressed the government’s commitment to completing the project, with an expected completion date of September 30, 2025. He stated, “I visited with the MP for Mbeere North to assess progress.
This project will support approximately 1,000 homes in Kanyuambora.” Kindiki emphasized that the government aims to finalize the project by the end of September.
MP Geoffrey Ruku, who has been a vocal supporter of the Kenya Kwanza administration, expressed gratitude for the project’s progress and extended an invitation to President William Ruto to visit Mbeere North.
He remarked, “We tell the President that when he visits the Mt. Kenya region, he is welcome to Mbeere North. We will receive him like a hero, with great celebration.”
During the visit, MP Ruku received the news of his nomination as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programmes.
The nomination follows the dismissal of Justin Muturi from the Cabinet.
Ruku’s appointment is pending vetting and approval by relevant parliamentary committee.
The inspection was marked by active community participation, with local residents and officials engaging in discussions about the project’s impact.
Deputy President Kindiki and MP Ruku joined community members in laying pipes at the irrigation site, symbolizing their hands-on approach to the project’s development.
The Kanyuambora Irrigation Project represents a significant investment in Mbeere North’s agricultural sector, with the potential to transform the livelihoods of thousands of residents.
The collaborative efforts of national and local leaders, along with active community involvement, are pivotal to the project’s success.
