Bishop Gerald Mwangi Muriithi Elected to Lead ACK Mt. Kenya West Diocese

The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Mt. Kenya West Diocese has elected a new bishop after a lengthy legal dispute over the succession process.

This is after the High Court in Nyeri recently dismissed a petition filed by a faithful, Pharis Muriithi, who had challenged the church’s procedure for selecting the new leader.

In a significant turn of events, the court ruled that the election of the new bishop was conducted in accordance with the church’s governance guidelines, allowing the diocese to proceed with its plans for the installation of Bishop Gerald Mwangi Muriithi as the new leader.

Bishop Muriithi, a respected cleric within the ACK, will officially be installed as the 7th Bishop of the Mt. Kenya West Diocese on March 23, 2025, at St. Peter ACK Church in Nyeri.

This transition comes after the retirement of Bishop Joseph Kagunda, who served the diocese for two decades, from 2004 to 2024.

Under his leadership, the diocese expanded and strengthened its presence within the community. His retirement opened the door for a new leader to take the reins and guide the faithful of the Mt. Kenya West Diocese.

Pharis Muriithi, a member of the church, had filed the lawsuit, alleging that the succession process was not transparent and had not followed proper procedures.

He raised concerns about the legitimacy of the electoral process and sought to prevent the new bishop’s installation.

However, after a thorough examination, the Nyeri High Court ruled in favor of the church, dismissing the petition and clearing the path for Bishop Muriithi’s upcoming installation.

The court’s ruling has been welcomed by many in the diocese, as it ensures a smooth transition and continuity of leadership in the church.

The election of Bishop Gerald Mwangi Muriithi is seen as a new chapter for the ACK Mt. Kenya West Diocese, with many anticipating a period of growth and revitalization under his leadership.

Bishop Muriithi’s installation will take place during a special service at St. Peter ACK Church, Nyeri, on March 23, 2025, marking a historic moment for the diocese and the broader Anglican community in Kenya.

The church, which has played a central role in the spiritual and social life of the Mt. Kenya region, is hopeful for a future guided by faith, unity, and commitment to its mission.
