For Macmillan Motari Nyakwaya, the views came easy. The arrests came easier.
The 23-year-old content creator, who built a following on TikTok by pulling off attention-grabbing stunts, walked into the Kisumu Law Courts in handcuffs Wednesday, the price, prosecutors allege, of a viral stunt gone too far: the deliberate destruction of Kenyan currency on camera.
Nyakwaya was brought before Senior Resident Magistrate Noelyne Reuben Akee, but walked away without formal charges, at least for now.
The prosecution moved swiftly to request a 14-day detention window, arguing that investigators need more time to build their case against the social media personality, whose videos allegedly showed him defacing or destroying Kenya shilling notes for the thrill of the algorithm.
The magistrate heard the application, and Nyakwaya was ordered back to Kisumu Central Police Station, where he will remain until March 25, 2026, the date court will rule on whether detectives get their two extra weeks.
The viral fame could come at a steep legal cost. Under the Central Bank of Kenya Act, the deliberate destruction or defacement of Kenyan currency is a criminal offence.
If convicted, Nyakwaya faces a fine of up to Ksh 1 million, a custodial sentence of up to three years in prison, or both, penalties designed to protect the integrity of the national currency.
Legal experts note that the fact the alleged acts were performed publicly and recorded for social media clout could weigh heavily against him, as it demonstrates deliberate and calculated intent rather than accidental damage.
For a young man accustomed to controlling his own narrative one video at a time, the story is now firmly in someone else’s hands.
Whether the content was art, recklessness, or something in between, Kenyan law takes a dim view of currency destruction, and the courts appear in no hurry to scroll past this one.
