Renowned Nairobi-based car dealer Joseph Kairu Wambui, widely known by his alias Khalif Kairo, has been charged at the Milimani Law Courts with defrauding two traders of nearly Ksh 5 million.
The charges stem from allegations that Kairo duped his clients into believing he would import high-end vehicles for them from Japan, a promise he never fulfilled.
Khalif Kairo, who operates a popular car dealership in the city, faces two separate counts of obtaining money by fraudulent means.
According to the prosecution, Kairo tricked Dola Ayalo Okoth into transferring Ksh 2,984,998 into his bank account, falsely assuring him that he would purchase a Subaru Outback.
The alleged fraudulent transaction occurred between July 29, 2024, and November 16, 2024, at an undisclosed location within Nairobi.
In a similar case, Kairo is accused of convincing Jeff Kyule Munane to transfer Ksh 2,145,150, promising to import a Honda Vezel Hybrid from Japan. However, like the previous transaction, the vehicle was never delivered.
Khalif Kairo was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, where he denied all charges.
In his defense, Kairo’s legal team, including renowned lawyers Danstan Omari, Kliff Ombeta, and Martina Swiga, claimed that their client was the victim of a failed business deal, and they requested lenient bail terms for him.
The court is expected to deliver a ruling on the bail and bond application on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, as Kairo awaits further legal proceedings.
