Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has finally spoken out ahead of his scheduled appearance before the Senate plenary on Wednesday, where he is set to face an impeachment motion filed against him by members of the county assembly.
Addressing supporters and athletes at the Belgut Half Marathon held at Sossiot Grounds on Sunday, August 24, 2025, an event organized by Belgut MP Nelson Koech, Governor Mutai exuded confidence in his ability to overcome the allegations leveled against him and survive impeachment for a second time.
“I stand before you today with a clear conscience. I am confident that justice will prevail, and I will once again emerge victorious against these baseless allegations,” Mutai declared to cheers from the crowd.
The impeachment motion, which accuses Governor Mutai of gross misconduct and abuse of office, has been a source of intense political drama in Kericho County.
This marks the second time Mutai is facing an impeachment process during his tenure.
Governor Mutai criticized his detractors, insisting that the charges are politically motivated attempts to destabilize his administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“These accusations are nothing but political witch-hunts aimed at undermining the progress we have made in Kericho. I urge my supporters and the people of Kericho to remain calm and united as we face this challenge together,” he said.
Belgut MP Nelson Koech, who organized the half marathon, stood firmly behind the governor, describing Mutai as a leader committed to development.
“Governor Mutai has transformed Kericho in many ways. This impeachment effort is unfair and politically driven. We are here today to show solidarity and support for a leader who truly cares about our people,” Koech said.
Political analysts suggest that Mutai’s appearance before the Senate will be closely watched as it could set the tone for the political landscape in the region.
The Senate will decide whether to uphold the impeachment motion or clear the governor of the charges.
The upcoming hearing has attracted interest from various stakeholders, including civil society groups, who emphasize the importance of a fair and transparent process.
As the political drama unfolds, residents of Kericho remain divided, with some expressing unwavering support for Governor Mutai, while others call for accountability and transparency.
Governor Mutai vowed to continue working for the benefit of the county, irrespective of the outcome of the impeachment proceedings.
“My focus remains on serving the people of Kericho. I will not be distracted by politics; our development agenda must continue,” he affirmed.
The Senate plenary session is scheduled for Wednesday, where Governor Mutai will have the opportunity to respond to the charges before the upper house makes its determination.
