New EACC CEO Abdi Ahmed Mohamud Sworn into Office at Supreme Court

Abdi Ahmed Mohamud has officially been sworn in as the new Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Monday January 13,2024

His swearing-in ceremony took place earlier today at the Supreme Court of Kenya, where Chief Justice Martha Koome presided over the event.

Mohamud’s appointment comes after the completion of a six-year term by his predecessor, Twalib Mbarak, who stepped down on January 10, 2025.

In his inaugural speech, Mohamud, who assumes office with the title of Chief Executive Officer and Secretary of the Commission, outlined his commitment to combating corruption, economic crimes, and unethical conduct in Kenya.

“As I assume this office today, I am acutely aware of the immense responsibility and the high expectations placed on the Commission by the Kenyan people,” Mohamud said.

“Corruption has long hindered our nation’s growth and prosperity, and I am deeply committed to fighting it with every tool at our disposal, with a particular focus on empowering the youth and involving all stakeholders in this critical fight.”

Mr. Mohamud, who holds the title of MBS, emphasized the importance of strengthening existing anti-corruption strategies and enhancing collaboration across various sectors.

He called for the mobilization of Kenya’s youthful population, encouraging their active participation in shaping a transparent and ethical future for the nation.

The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Dr. David Oginde, the EACC Chairperson; Hon. George Murugara, Chairperson of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly (JLAC); Mr. Mohamed I. Amin, Director of Criminal Investigations; Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Mr. Eliud Lagat; and Mr. Aloys Kemo, Acting Secretary of Public Prosecutions, who represented the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In her remarks, Chief Justice Martha Koome highlighted the significance of the EACC’s role in safeguarding the integrity of the nation, stressing that the Commission’s effectiveness in dealing with corruption remains crucial to Kenya’s development agenda.

“Kenya’s battle against corruption is a fight we all share,” said Koome. “The EACC, under the leadership of Mr. Mohamud, must continue to lead from the front, inspiring confidence in the justice system and fostering accountability in both public and private sectors.”

Mohamud, a seasoned expert in governance and anti-corruption efforts, takes over a Commission that plays a pivotal role in upholding Kenya’s integrity and advancing ethical conduct across the nation.

His leadership is expected to inject renewed vigor into ongoing campaigns and investigations aimed at tackling corruption at all levels of government and business.

As the country watches keenly, Mr. Mohamud’s leadership will be closely scrutinized, with many hopeful that his tenure will be marked by significant progress in Kenya’s ongoing fight against corruption.
