Kahawa Court Detains Technician for Tampering with CCTV in Ojwang’ Murder Probe

A Kahawa court has ordered the detention of technician Kelvin Mutisya Mutava for 14 days to allow police to complete investigations into allegations that he tampered with CCTV footage at Nairobi’s Central Police Station.

According to investigators, Mutava was allegedly paid Sh3,000 to interfere with the CCTV system shortly after the death of a suspect, Ojwang’.

Mutava was remanded alongside another suspect, Bryan Mwaniki Njue, who has been in custody at the Central Police Station since June 5.

Njue, along with three others — Gin Ammotou, Collins Karani, and Jemimah Kagondo — had been detained at the station for five days following a court order from the Milimani Law Courts. They were arrested for being in possession of a toy gun and a knife.

According to IPOA investigating officer Paul Njihia, Njue was in the holding cells at the time Ojwang’ was allegedly assaulted and killed. The four suspects were later released on June 11, 2025, after their case was withdrawn when police confirmed that the white revolver recovered during their arrest was an imitation firearm.

However, they were re-arrested by DCI detectives to aid investigations into Ojwang’s death.

While Njue was arraigned at the Kahawa Law Courts, his co-inmates — Gin Ammotou and Collins Karani — were also presented before the same court.

In a miscellaneous application, the investigating officer requested that the matter be heard in camera due to the sensitive nature of the offence, stating that they are investigating the “gruesome murder” of Ojwang’.

Njihia told the court that mobile phones seized from the suspects will undergo forensic analysis. He added that Mutava was arrested on June 14, 2025, near Central Police Station and booked at Kilimani Police Station.

The court also heard that the suspects have so far cooperated with investigators and that the DCI is awaiting guidance from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on how to proceed.

“Based on brief evidence gathered so far, the first respondent and others still at large are suspected to have, in one way or another, attempted to cover up the brutal fatal assault of the deceased while inside the cells at Central Police Station,” said Njihia.

He further stated that the second respondent, Mutava, was inside the station at the time the deceased was allegedly assaulted.

Police told the court they have not had sufficient time to complete investigations and sought a 21-day extension. However, the court granted a 14-day remand for the two suspects at Kilimani Police Station, pending the completion of investigations.
