The battle for Kiambu County gubernatorial seat  just got a whole lot more interesting.
This is after former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua today unveiled John Mwaura as the party’s gubernatorial aspirant for Kiambu County in the 2027 General Election, in a high-energy ceremony held at the DCP headquarters in Nairobi.
The move signals Gachagua’s most direct challenge yet to the political establishment in one of Kenya’s most vote-rich and strategically critical counties.
Mwaura’s unveiling is a clear declaration that DCP is not just a presidential vehicle for Gachagua, it is a full-spectrum political machine with its eyes firmly on the counties.
Kiambu County is no ordinary battlefield.
Over 150 DCP aspirants from Kiambu had earlier unanimously endorsed Gachagua as their 2027 presidential flag bearer, signaling an already-energised grassroots base ready to carry the party’s flag.
With today’s official unveiling of Mwaura, that energy now has a face and a name at the top of the county ticket.
The county’s governor seat has already attracted aspirants including Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, Kimani Waceke, and Robert Ndirangu, while incumbent Governor Kimani Wamatangi has conspicuously kept his cards close to his chest.
Mwaura’s entry into the race, backed by the full weight of DCP’s machinery, is expected to dramatically reshape the dynamics of the gubernatorial contest.
Gachagua has made no secret of his intentions to dominate Kiambu.
The former DP has previously alleged that rival politicians pressured President Ruto to block DCP meetings in Kiambu County and even demolish Governor Wamatangi’s business premises, moves he interpreted as desperation in the face of DCP’s surging popularity in the region.
Speaking in December 2025 after by-election victories, Gachagua declared that DCP will form the next government, vowing to win the presidency and most gubernatorial and senatorial seats in 2027.
Today’s unveiling of Mwaura in Kiambu is a concrete step toward delivering on that promise.
DCP, whose populist slogan is “Skiza Wakenya”— Listen to Kenyans — promises what Gachagua has called a reimagination of Kenyan politics, rooted in public accountability, anti-corruption, youth inclusion, and a return to the unfinished promise of multi-party democracy.
Crucially, Gachagua has insisted there are no direct nominations in DCP, meaning Mwaura will be expected to face party primaries, a commitment designed to boost the party’s credibility and distinguish it from the perceived patronage politics of rival outfits.
With the 2027 General Election now firmly in view, Kiambu residents will be watching closely to see whether Mwaura can convert Gachagua’s formidable grassroots momentum into a winning campaign, and whether DCP can truly dethrone the established order in one of Kenya’s most competitive counties.
