The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate the illegal dumping of garbage and the disruption of the sewer system at Kenya Power’s premises in Nairobi.
In a letter to DCI dated February 26, Deputy DPP Jacinta Nyamosi emphasized that the incident has raised public concern and warrants urgent attention.
“This occurrence has caused apprehension among the public and is a matter of legitimate public interest,” Nyamosi stated, underscoring the potential health hazards if the issue remains unresolved.
The incident is tied to an ongoing dispute between Nairobi County and Kenya Power over Ksh 3 billion in unpaid electricity bills. Nyamosi expressed concern that failure to address the issue could lead to significant health risks, not only to the immediate area but across Nairobi as a whole.
Nyamosi has instructed DCI to collaborate with relevant public health, environmental, and water sanitation authorities, and submit a comprehensive report within seven days.
The action follows a sharp rebuke from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who called out the Nairobi County government for their involvement in the incident.
On February 26, Wetang’ula summoned Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, demanding an explanation for the lack of enforcement against city officials responsible for the dumping.
“This lawless behavior must not be tolerated,” Wetang’ula declared, urging swift action against those responsible for the illegal waste disposal.
