DIG Eliud Lagat Steps Aside Amid Probe into Blogger Albert Ojwang’s Murder

In a dramatic twist that has sent shockwaves through the country’s security circles, Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has finally stepped aside to allow independent investigations into the brutal murder of outspoken blogger and activist Albert Ojwang’.

The announcement came Monday evening through a statement issued by DIG Lagat said he had voluntarily taken leave from his duties “to facilitate an impartial and thorough investigation.”

He further emphasized that his stepping aside was in response to the ongoing investigations into the tragic death of Ojwang’.

“In the good and conscious thought of my role and responsibilities as the Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service, and in view of the ongoing investigations into the unfortunate incident of the death of Mr. Albert Ojwang’, I have today opted to step aside from the office of the Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service pending completion of investigations,” Lagat’s statement read.

As part of his temporary leave, Lagat confirmed that the functions of his office would be assumed by his deputy until the investigations into the case are concluded.

Lagat also expressed his willingness to fully cooperate with the investigation, offering any necessary support to the authorities. He extended heartfelt condolences to Ojwang’s family for their devastating loss.

“I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me during the investigations of the unfortunate incident. I offer immense condolences to the family of Mr. Albert Ojwang’ for their great loss,” he added.

The announcement comes amid growing demands from the public for Lagat’s arrest and prosecution.

The DIG’s name became prominently linked to the case after it was revealed that he was the primary complainant in a series of events leading to Ojwang’s fatal arrest.

Ojwang’ had allegedly posted on social media accusing Lagat of corruption within the National Police Service.

The post, which appeared on the X platform, accused the senior officer of corrupt activities, a claim that led to Ojwang’s arrest and, ultimately, his untimely death in police custody.

Ojwang’s murder has ignited widespread protests, particularly among Kenya’s youth, who took to the streets last week demanding swift action.

Kenyans have expressed outrage over the circumstances surrounding the case, calling for a transparent and thorough investigation to ensure justice for the blogger.

The investigation continues to unfold as authorities work to piece together the events that led to Ojwang’s death and hold those responsible accountable.

His resignation came after OCS Central police station Chief Inspector Samson Taalam was detained by the court until Wednesday when the court is expected to rule on an application by IPOA to continue holding him for 21 days.
