The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested Fleviar Muhonja Anaya, a 29-year-old househelp who masterminded a bold theft, vanishing with Sh 2.2 million from her employer’s home in Nairobi.
The arrest followed an extensive multi-county manhunt of detectives from the DCI Nairobi Regional Headquarters and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.
The crime unfolded on March 16, 2025, when the unsuspecting employer left her home for errands, leaving Muhonja alone.
Everything seemed ordinary until a security guard, hours later, reported that the househelp had been seen leaving the premises with a suspiciously large carrier bag.
Muhonja claimed she was running an errand for her employer, but upon further inquiry, the employer confirmed no such instructions had been given.
As soon as the employer attempted to contact Muhonja, her phone was switched off, raising suspicions.
Rushing back home, the employer’s worst fears were realized her hard-earned Sh 2.2 million, which had been safely stored in her bedroom, was gone, and so was Muhonja.
She reported the matter to police.
A swift investigation was launched by the DCI, and after careful analysis of forensic evidence and intelligence gathered from multiple sources, detectives managed to trace Muhonja’s movements.
The hunt led them to Malava, Kakamega County, where she was arrested.
During interrogation, Muhonja revealed the locations where she had hidden parts of the stolen money.
The first breakthrough came when detectives traced Sh700,000 to her grandmother’s house in Kapsoi, Vihiga County.
The operation then shifted to Muhonja’s rural home in Kipkaren, Uasin Gishu County, where three gold chain links were recovered, which she had purchased using the stolen funds.
The detectives didn’t stop there. Their investigation continued into Nairobi’s South B, Fuata Nyayo area, where they uncovered an additional Sh 800,000 hidden in a rented house, bringing the total recovery to over Sh 1.5 million.
The house help is currently in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station where she is undergoing legal processing as authorities prepare for her day in court on Tuesday April 1,2025.
