Court Orders Detention of Two Nurses After Acid Attack on Police in Ngara

Two nurses, Jonah Kipsiror Murori and Mwaura Karumbi, who are accused of attacking three police officers with acid after storming the Ngara Medical Centre, will remain in custody for four additional days.

This follows a ruling by the court, which granted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) extra time to conduct further investigations.

The two are under investigation for operating a pharmacy without proper registration by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board. The incident occurred when police officers, on a routine patrol, received information that an illegal abortion was taking place at the Ngara Medical Centre, located near the Ngara Equity roundabout.

The officers proceeded to the centre and knocked on the door to gain access. As they waited, Jonah Kipsiror Murori allegedly appeared at the door and, without warning, threw acid at the officers.

The acid caused serious burns to the officers, who were rushed to Nairobi West Hospital. They were immediately admitted to the High Dependency Unit for urgent care.

In the aftermath of the attack, additional police reinforcements arrived at the scene and discovered a container with a liquid substance as well as materials resembling human organs, which raised further concerns.

Along with the suspects, three patients were found in the facility, including a woman who was undergoing an abortion.

The woman sustained significant injuries and was transferred to Mbagathi Hospital in critical condition.

The two suspects have been arrested and are now facing charges related to the illegal operation of a medical facility.

They will be arraigned in court on Monday, December 2, 2024, where further legal proceedings will be determined.
