Josphat Kamau Chege appeared before Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, where he pleaded guilty to charges of theft, contrary to Section 268(1) read with Section 275 of the Penal Code.

According to court records, the offence occurred on January 4 at around 3:00 p.m. inside the KRC workshop.

The stolen property, three radiator grills intended for locomotive engines, is valued at Sh40,000.

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) told the court that railway security officers on routine patrol noticed commotion near the workshop fence.

Upon investigation, they found Chege carrying metals wrapped in bed sheets. He attempted to flee but was apprehended by the officers.

The stolen grills were recovered and presented in court as exhibits, with Chege confirming ownership.

Facing Chief Magistrate Dolphina Alego, Chege asked for leniency, explaining that he believed the grills were not in use and had taken them to address personal challenges.

“I did not know they were being used, Your Honour. I ask for forgiveness,” he said.

The court has directed that a probation report be prepared for presentation on January 8, 2026, before ruling on sentencing.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has raised the alarm over fresh calls for a national referendum, branding them as a government ploy to manipulate the 2027 elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi on Tuesday, Musyoka accused the administration of seeking to “extend their grip on power through backdoor constitutional changes.”

“This push for a referendum is not about the people,” Musyoka said.

“It is a deliberate attempt by the government to rewrite rules in their favor, ensuring they stay in power beyond 2027. We will not allow them to undermine the will of Kenyans.”

The former Vice President also touched on the United Opposition’s strategy ahead of the next general election.

Musyoka confirmed that the coalition would unveil its presidential candidate by the end of March 2026, signaling a united front against the ruling government.

“We are committed to presenting a candidate who reflects the aspirations of all Kenyans,” Musyoka stated.

“The United Opposition is ready to offer a credible alternative to the current leadership, and our decision will be guided by the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and competence.”

Kalonzo’s remarks come amid growing debates over constitutional amendments and the timing of political maneuvers ahead of the 2027 elections.

His stance puts him at odds with other political figures, including PCS Musalia Mudavadi, who have expressed support for a referendum.

Cases of spiking drinks with drugs in entertainment joints are on a worrying rise, with the latest incident in Ruaka drawing public concern over the safety of nightlife in Kenya.

On Sunday afternoon, residents of Ruaka were left in shock after a man was found dead inside his parked car near Total Roselyn.

Witnesses say the vehicle had been stationed at the spot since morning, but it wasn’t until around 3 p.m. that members of the public alerted the police.

Officers who responded to the scene broke into the car, only to discover that the man had already passed away.

It is alleged that the deceased may have been a victim of drink spiking, possibly given an overdose of a drug-laced meal or beverage, with some online users speculating he had been “given an overdose of rice.”

The exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed by authorities pending a post-mortem examination.

The incident has sparked widespread debate online, with many Kenyans calling for increased vigilance and empathy within social spaces.

On X (formerly Twitter), users expressed both grief and frustration at what they described as a growing culture of indifference and unsafe nightlife habits.

“Why would a man go clubbing alone without friends? He’s selfish to himself and life,” one user commented.

Another added, “Friends always come through in such situations. Sitawafunza kila kitu.”

Others, however, urged compassion, emphasizing that the tragedy reflected deeper societal issues rather than poor personal choices.

“It’s time Kenyans start caring about each other. That guy probably suffocated in the car,” wrote user @EriqNyamweya.

“Watching someone parked for more than six hours should have raised eyebrows.”

Recent months have seen an increase in reports of drink-spiking incidents across major towns such as Nairobi, Thika, and Kisumu, often leading to robbery, assault, or even death.

The government and security experts are urging revellers to avoid going out alone, watch their drinks, and report suspicious behavior immediately.

As investigations continue, the Ruaka tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the rising threat posed by drug-spiking and the urgent need for both public awareness and community vigilance in protecting lives.
