Health services in Nairobi County ground to a halt today as medical workers in public hospitals officially commenced a widespread strike.

The worker accused Governor Johnson Sakaja of failing to address long‑standing grievances including salary delays and unmet workforce agreements.

The industrial action, which began with doctors in mid‑December 2025 and has since spread to all cadres of health staff, including nurses and laboratory technicians, has paralysed services across the city’s major public facilities.

“We are left with no option but to withdraw our services,” said a senior clinician at Mbagathi Level 5 Hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“Our salaries have been delayed repeatedly, and our signed agreements have not been implemented.”

Other striking workers have echoed the same frustration.

“Patients are now our greatest concern, but the county government has ignored our repeated appeals,” said a nurse participating in the walk‑out.

“Governor Sakaja has simply not listened to us.”

The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) and other unions have formally rejected county orders to resume work, dismissing them as ineffective without concrete action on their demands.

In response, the Nairobi County Government previously labelled the earlier stages of the strike illegal, demanding staff return to duty within 12 hours or face disciplinary action.

Health facilities like Mbagathi.Kenyatta National Hospital and other referral hospitals are reported struggling to cope with the influx of untreated patients due to the work stoppage.

In a brief statement earlier this weekend, a spokesperson for Governor Sakaja defended the county’s efforts, saying authorities remain committed to dialogue to avert disruptions but also insisted that services must continue.

However, workers maintain meaningful negotiation has yet to happen.

With services stalled, many patients have been turned away or forced to seek care in private facilities, a significant financial burden for low‑income residents.

“I came for treatment for my son’s fever and was told nobody is available,” said one patient outside a public hospital. “This is dangerous.”

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has raised questions over Governor Johnson Sakaja’s decision to move all Nairobi County health facility bank accounts from Cooperative Bank to Sidian Bank, terming the directive suspicious and potentially corrupt.

In a circular dated November 5, 2025, County Secretary Godfrey Akumali informed all Level 4 and 5 hospitals and health facility heads that the Nairobi City County Executive Committee had resolved to designate Sidian Bank as its principal banker.

“In its 69th Meeting held on 28th October, 2025, the Nairobi City County Executive Committee resolved to designate Sidian Bank as its principal banker,” the circular read in part.

“This correspondence hereby serves to communicate the resolution of the County Executive Committee to request that you complete the attached forms to facilitate the opening of your respective accounts,” it added, directing facilities to submit all required documents to the County Executive Committee Member for Finance by Friday, November 7, 2025.

The circular was copied to Governor Sakaja, Deputy Governor James Muchiri, and the County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning.

Reacting to the directive, Sifuna accused the Sakaja administration of making a questionable financial decision that raises red flags over possible kickbacks and misuse of public resources.

“The health facilities in Nairobi have been banking with Cooperative Bank, a tier-one bank with a solid history and reputation,” Sifuna posted on X.

“How you wake up one day and direct all of them to move to a tier-three bank cannot be explained any other way than that corruption is at play,” he said.

Sifuna, who also serves as the ODM Secretary-General, demanded that the governor explain why such a major financial shift was made without public consultation or approval by the County Assembly.

He argued that changing the county’s banking partner is not only irregular but could also disrupt essential health services that rely on seamless financial operations for procurement, payments, and emergency responses.

“These hospitals handle millions of shillings daily, from patient fees to supplier payments. You don’t just wake up and hand that responsibility to a smaller bank without explaining what benefit it brings to Nairobians,” Sifuna stated.

The senator further questioned whether due diligence had been conducted to assess Sidian Bank’s capacity to handle the scale of county transactions.

“If the County Treasury has nothing to hide, they should table all procurement documents and minutes that led to this decision,” he added.

Efforts to reach County Secretary Godfrey Akumali and County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning for comment were unsuccessful by press time.

Governor Sakaja has not publicly responded to the concerns, though the county circular emphasized that the directive was a formal resolution of the Executive Committee.

The sudden shift comes amid growing scrutiny of financial management practices in county governments, with senators and watchdog agencies warning that arbitrary banking changes can expose public funds to mismanagement.

The plans to remove former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko from office were orchestrated at State House, the Anti-Corruption Court heard on Monday.

Testifying before Milimani Principal Magistrate Charles Ondieki, former Nairobi County CEC for Finance, Winfred Gathagu, alleged that the graft charges leveled against Sonko were part of a well-planned strategy spearheaded by senior officials at State House aimed at pushing him out of office.

“My colleagues and I from the Nairobi County were approached severally by senior officials from State House in order to assist in coming up with solid cases against my former boss, Mike Sonko, for court cases, impeachment, and so on,” Gathagu told the court.

Gathagu testified that Sonko was targeted due to his anti-corruption stance at City Hall, asserting that the entire plan to oust him was hatched at the highest levels of government.

“That all happened because Sonko was fighting corruption at City Hall,” she stated.

Led in her evidence by lawyers Assa Nyakundi and Elizabeth Ochieng, the former finance officer detailed how she was drawn into the case, revealing that she had recorded two statements with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on January 15 and 20, 2020.

The finance officer said that she had testified in the case both as a prosecution witness, under witness protection, and as a defence witness for Sonko

Although she initially testified for the prosecution, she refused to lie in court and chose to tell the truth.

As a result, the state almost arrested her.

She further informed the court of her involvement with Webtribe Ltd, also known as Jambo Pay, the firm contracted to provide electronic revenue collection services for the Nairobi County Government.

“I made payments to Webtribe, also known as Jambo Pay, when I was Chief Officer Finance for the services that were rendered for collecting revenue electronically on behalf of the Nairobi County Government.”

When questioned about her familiarity with the company’s leadership, she responded:”Yes, I am aware of the director Danson Muchemi, since we used to liaise with them on a day-to-day basis on revenue collection. I confirm I found the company had already been rendering services to the former governor evans Kidero administration since 2018.”

She clarified that payments were made without external influence and explained the reasons behind delays.

“I paid the company without any influence. The main reason for delayed payments to Jambo Pay was because the exchequer had not released money to the county, and sometimes the money the county had was used to cater for urgent operational costs,” Gathagu stated.

She emphasized that Sonko was not involved in any specific payment processes.

“Sonko was not involved in the payments of services offered. He was only involved in budget-making.”

When questioned by Lawyer Nyakundi on whether she was ever influenced by Sonko to make payments to any individuals, including an alleged 25,000 people, she denied the claims outright.

“I was not influenced by Sonko to effect any payments, including to service providers. I would pay service providers after receiving money from the Central Bank of Kenya.”

Gathagu further testified that Sonko had raised concerns about the integrity of City Hall cashiers.

“Sonko kept complaining about cashiers at City Hall and would threaten to have them sacked for malpractices.”

She added: “It is true that we discovered some irregularities in effecting payments and that is why my former boss Sonko kept complaining. We were trying to correct the same and when we discovered irregularities in the payment system, we fired the cashiers and hired fresh ones. The old cashiers had stayed for over five years.”

Despite her explosive claims about strategy meetings and the involvement of State House officials, Gathagu did not name any individuals involved in the alleged plot.

During cross-examination by DPP Wesley Nyamache, Gathagu admitted that she did not record any statement with the EACC concerning the State House plot against Sonko.

The former finance boss was testifying in a sh 20 million graft case against Sonko and his co-accused Businessman Jamal Ombok.

The hearing continues
