Sakaja, however, stopped short of announcing a political defection, saying he is still consulting and weighing his options before making a final decision on the party he will use to defend his Nairobi seat.

Speaking during an interview with Radio Citizen on Wednesday, August 26, the governor acknowledged that he had held discussions with various groups linked to ODM, including youth, women leaders and Members of Parliament.

“There has been that call. Some officials and party members have said that they want me to move to their party. I have had meetings with the youths who met the other day; women leaders and MPs were also present; you can’t ignore that,” Sakaja said.

The governor said he was taking the calls seriously but maintained that there was no official date for his departure from UDA.

“There is no official date for when we will leave UDA, but the call is there. It is something I am observing, we must also look at what people are saying. If that’s what they want then I am their employee,” he said.

Sakaja linked the renewed speculation over his possible move to ODM to his close relationship with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died in October 2025.

The governor described Raila as a father figure and said the former ODM leader had also wanted him to join the party before his death.

“In October, we will be marking one year since Raila left us and we were very close, he was like my father, and he also wanted that (to join). We were in touch a lot before his death,” Sakaja said.

The remarks come amid intensified political realignments in Nairobi ahead of the 2027 elections, with ODM leaders openly courting the governor.

In July, ODM Director of Elections and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed told Sakaja to join the party if he wanted its backing for a second term, arguing that ODM remained a dominant political force in Nairobi.

Sakaja was elected governor in 2022 on a UDA ticket and has since worked closely with President William Ruto’s administration. He has also repeatedly expressed his intention to defend his seat in 2027.

The governor said political decisions must also take into account continuity in governance, arguing that frequent political transitions can disrupt development programmes.

Gachagua claimed on Wednesday that South Korean company Miru Systems Co. Ltd had effectively been selected to supply Kenya’s Integrated Elections Management System (IEMS), despite the procurement process remaining open.

The tender, referenced as IEBC/OIT/01/2026-2027, was advertised by IEBC on August 11 and is scheduled to close on September 1, 2026, at 10am.

“What Kenyans do not know is that the tender process and result has already been pre-conceived and is awaiting rubber stamping to MIRU SYSTEMS CO. LTD of South Korea,” Gachagua alleged.

He made the remarks while addressing the media before travelling to the United States, where he is expected to spend about eight weeks.

Gachagua accused the commission, led by Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon, of conducting what he described as a sham procurement process designed to create an appearance of competition among bidders.

He questioned how the technical specifications for the tender were developed and whether they had been tailored to favour Miru Systems.

“Can IEBC produce documentary evidence showing who drafted the technical specifications for Tender No. IEBC/OIT/01/2026–2027, including all internal committee minutes, technical working papers, market surveys, and approval records?” he asked.

The DCP leader also alleged that changes had been made within the IEBC procurement department to facilitate the process, claiming the commission’s procurement manager had been removed and replaced with an individual he described as a “puppet”.

Gachagua further questioned whether the commission had undertaken adequate market research to determine how many companies could meet the tender’s mandatory technical requirements.

He raised concerns about Miru Systems’ record in other countries, citing alleged problems involving election technology supplied in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Philippines and Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

“This company should be banned and never allowed to manage any election or supply its equipment and technology,” he said.

Gachagua warned that changing Kenya’s election management technology less than a year before the 2027 polls could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

“Vulnerable and defective electoral voting technology threatens electoral transparency and the credibility of an electoral process,” he said.

He further claimed that replacing the existing election technology with Miru’s system could expose the voter register to manipulation during the transfer of data.

“The real mischief of IEBC is to interfere with the voter register during the transfer of data from the Smartmatic KIEMS kits to the Miru Technologies Kits,” Gachagua claimed.

He alleged that such a move could result in voter suppression and manipulation of the 2027 election.

Gachagua’s allegations had not been independently substantiated as of Wednesday, while the procurement process remains open ahead of the September 1 deadline.

IEBC’s separate tender for ballot papers, tactile folders, the Register of Voters and statutory election result declaration forms is also scheduled to close on September 1, but at noon.

Speaking during the launch of the Roadmap to Violence-Free 2027 General Elections at the Pullman Hotel in Nairobi on Tuesday August 25,2026 , NCIC Chairperson Bishop Dr Kepha Nyamweya Omae said Kenya must begin preparing for peaceful elections long before polling day.

“The launch of this Roadmap is, therefore, not just the unveiling of a document, it is a call to action,” Bishop Omae said.

“It is a collective commitment by institutions, leaders, communities and citizens to begin the work of prevention of violence early enough, rather than responding when tensions have escalated.”

The launch was attended by Interior Cabinet Secretary Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen, Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration Dr Raymond Omollo, a representative of Chief Justice Martha Koome, UNDP Resident Representative Dr Jean-Luc Stalon, UN Resident Coordinator Dr Gary Conille and Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Deputy Country Director Jooyoung Park.

In his address the bishop added that the commission was deeply concerned by what he termed growing manifestations of political intolerance, hate speech, ethnic contempt, disinformation and other forms of divisive rhetoric in the country’s public discourse.

“Words spoken carelessly by leaders and influential individuals can deepen divisions, fuel mistrust and create conditions that may ultimately threaten national peace and cohesion,” he said.

Bishop Omae called on political leaders, aspirants, opinion shapers and other public figures to exercise restraint as the country approaches the 2027 elections.

“As we approach the 2027 elections, political leaders, aspirants, opinion shapers and all those with public influence must exercise restraint, responsibility and patriotism,” he said.

“We must reject the politics of exclusion and embrace politics founded on ideas, issues and service to the people.”

The NCIC chairperson said violence-free elections could not be achieved by one institution, calling for a multi-sectoral approach involving government agencies, political actors, civil society, the media, religious leaders, development partners, communities and the youth.

“Our main focus must be on prevention,” he said.

“We must strengthen early warning and early response mechanisms, address triggers to conflicts before they escalate, counter hate speech and disinformation, promote dialogue and reconciliation, and ensure that communities are equipped with the tools and platforms necessary to resolve disputes peacefully.”

He also called for greater involvement of young people in peacebuilding, warning against their exploitation by political actors.

“The youth, who form a critical constituency in our electoral and democratic processes, must be placed at the center of peacebuilding efforts,” Bishop Omae said.

“They must not be viewed as instruments of political violence, but as partners and leaders in the peacebuilding process in Kenya.”

He stressed that preparations for peaceful elections must start immediately rather than being left until polling day.

“Peaceful elections begin long before polling day. They are built through the language we use, the institutions we strengthen, the grievances we address and the relationships we build among communities,” he said.

“The work begins now and it begins with you and me.”

Bishop Omae said NCIC would continue monitoring hate speech and ethnic contempt, facilitating dialogue, supporting peace structures and promoting responsible leadership and citizenship throughout the electoral cycle.

He urged political parties to put national interests above political interests and citizens to reject incitement and violence.

“Every leader must choose responsible speech over inflammatory rhetoric. Every political party must place the interests of the country above vested political interests. Every citizen must reject incitement, violence and manipulation,” he said.

He further challenged Kenyans to ensure the 2027 elections do not replicate the violence associated with previous electoral cycles.

“Let it serve as our collective declaration that Kenya will not repeat the mistakes of the past,” he said.

“Let us commit ourselves to an electoral process where political competition does not divide, where diversity is celebrated rather than weaponized, and where every Kenyan can participate freely and safely in the democratic process.”

Bishop Omae said the 2027 elections should demonstrate Kenya’s democratic maturity and national cohesion.

“The 2027 General Elections must demonstrate the maturity of our democracy and the strength of our national cohesion,” he said.

The NCIC chairperson thanked institutions and development partners involved in developing the roadmap, singling out the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) for their support.

He said the partnerships had supported initiatives including youth engagement through Transgenerational Conversations Town Halls, hate speech monitoring, peace messaging, and the development and dissemination of key policies.

“Together, let us choose peace. Together, let us protect our democracy. Together, let us build a united and cohesive Kenya for we are a people guided by ONE PEOPLE. ONE NATION WITH A SHARED DESTINY,” Bishop Omae said.

Gachagua, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader, made the remarks on Monday during his final engagements at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County, where he hosted delegations from Isiolo and Marsabit before meeting young Kenyans, including Gen Z.

The consultations, which brought together politicians, grassroots leaders, professionals, clergy and other opinion leaders, are expected to culminate in a 3pm address in which Gachagua will outline the views he gathered and his political direction.

The former Deputy President had initially planned a 45-day consultation but extended the exercise to 56 days as delegations continued visiting his Wamunyoro home.

During the Isiolo engagement, Gachagua dismissed the possibility of returning to an alliance with Ruto, saying he could not be persuaded by money or political pressure.

“I cannot take his money. He cannot bribe me. He cannot intimidate me. He cannot overthrow me,” Gachagua said

His remarks came after Ruto, in an interview published on Monday, said he was willing to work with opposition leaders but ruled out politicians he accused of promoting ethnic bigotry, divisive rhetoric and insults against Kenyans.

Gachagua said the rejection was mutual, insisting that his political differences with Ruto could not be resolved through an alliance.

The former Deputy President has increasingly positioned himself as part of the opposition effort to prevent Ruto from securing a second term in 2027.

He has also argued that opposition parties should ultimately settle on one presidential candidate to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration, saying he would be ready to carry the opposition ticket if chosen.

At the same time, Gachagua has said he would support another candidate if opposition leaders agreed on a different flag-bearer, and could take up a campaign leadership role.

His Wamunyoro consultations have been central to that strategy, allowing him to engage leaders and communities outside his traditional Mount Kenya political base.

On Monday, a delegation from northern Kenya, including representatives from Isiolo and Marsabit, visited Wamunyoro as Gachagua continued efforts to broaden what he has described as the Mount Kenya North political bloc.

The DCP leader has in recent weeks argued for a broader political coalition bringing together communities from the Mount Kenya region and other parts of the country.

He has also intensified his criticism of leaders supporting the Ruto administration, including Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, whom he recently accused of betraying the interests of the Mount Kenya region.

Uhuru spoke on Sunday in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, where he joined family members, political leaders and residents in marking the 23rd anniversary of the death of former Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa.

The former President arrived at Wamalwa’s Milimani home to a warm reception, with supporters breaking into song and dance as he was welcomed to the memorial.

He was received by Wamalwa’s brother and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, alongside Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu and Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi.

Uhuru later proceeded to Wamalwa’s mausoleum, where he laid a wreath and paid tribute to the former Vice President.

He also launched a book titled “My Country First ” documenting Wamalwa’s life and political legacy, for which he wrote the foreword.

Eugene Wamalwa said the publication had taken 23 years to complete.

But it was Uhuru’s remarks on the country’s political landscape that drew the greatest attention during the memorial.

The retired President sought to distance himself from claims that he was backing particular opposition politicians as political realignments gather pace ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said Kenyans should be allowed to freely choose their preferred leaders without interference from political figures.

“It’s the people who will decide. If they say it is Kalonzo, Ruto, Matiang’i, or Sifuna, it will be so. I don’t want to be called a sponsor; I have just said the power belongs to the people,” Uhuru said.

The crowd cheered when Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was mentioned, prompting Uhuru to make a pointed response.

“Jameni chungeni, sitaki kuitwa sponsor,” he said.

He also challenged political leaders to allow their opponents to campaign freely, warning against attempts to prevent rival groups from holding public meetings.

“I want to ask political leaders to talk to the people peacefully. This thing of stopping rivals from holding meetings should stop,” Uhuru said.

“Kenyans should not be forced to join this faction or that one. Kenyans should choose by themselves.”

His remarks came against the backdrop of growing political activity as parties and prominent leaders position themselves for the 2027 presidential contest.

Uhuru, however, maintained that political leaders should not dictate the choices of voters, saying Kenyans must be allowed to determine their preferred candidates.

He linked his call for political tolerance to Wamalwa’s legacy, describing the late Vice President as a key figure in Kenya’s democratic struggle.

Uhuru described Wamalwa as one of the better angels of our nature and the gentleman of Kenya’s politics.

“We are a democratic society, and those democratic ideals were fought for very hard… And we cannot allow ourselves to go backward,” he said.

Wamalwa served as Kenya’s eighth Vice President under retired President Mwai Kibaki after the National Rainbow Coalition won the 2002 General Election.

He died in London on August 23, 2003, aged 59, after a long illness.

The annual memorial has continued to bring together political leaders from across the country to celebrate his contribution to Kenya’s democratic struggle and political history.

This year’s event brought together Uhuru, Kalonzo, Karua, Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa and other leaders, providing a significant political gathering as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections.

“You cannot close a public office to deny the holder access. This is a violation of the Constitution… It is only a matter of time before the people of Homa Bay lock you out through the ballot. Your time is up, and you are going home,” he said.

Political allies of the governor have challenged Magwanga’s conduct, with County Finance CECM Solomon Obiero saying critics should resign if they plan to run against the governor.

The matter is now before the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Kisumu, where Magwanga is seeking orders compelling the county government to restore his office access and official vehicles.

Governor Wanga’s office has not yet filed a response to the lawsuit and the matter is pending hearing
