It sits in almost every Kenyan kitchen, a small tin of burnt-orange powder that turns pilau golden and gives curry its warmth.

Turmeric has long been sold as a miracle: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, a natural painkiller in a jar.

But a growing pile of medical case reports is asking an uncomfortable question, could the same spice that soothes your joints be silently scarring your kidneys?

Doctors in the United States recently documented the case of a 69-year-old man who walked in for a routine check-up and walked out with a kidney failure diagnosis nobody saw coming. His urine looked unremarkable.

His history offered no obvious red flags, until his doctors traced the damage to something almost comically ordinary: <cite index=”3-1″>chronic use of turmeric supplements, compounded by long-term antibiotic use and diarrhoea.

The culprit was oxalate, a natural compound that, in excess, crystallises inside kidney tissue and triggers inflammation.

It is a rare case, but rare does not mean irrelevant.

It is a warning flare over an assumption millions of people make: that because turmeric is “natural,” it is automatically harmless in any quantity.

Turmeric, much like spinach, beetroot and nuts, contains soluble oxalates.

In the gut, these can bind with calcium to form calcium oxalate, the compound behind roughly <cite index=”9-1″>75 percent of all kidney stone cases</cite> worldwide.

Research into curcumin, turmeric’s active compound, has found that <cite index=”9-1″>high-dose supplementation measurably raises urinary oxalate excretion, with one trial recording a 20 percent spike after just one gram of curcumin taken daily</cite>.

That is a dose far higher than what lands on your plate at dinner.

Herein lies the twist that most viral health posts skip: dose is everything.

<cite index=”9-1″>Ordinary culinary turmeric, at roughly one to three grams a day, appears to carry minimal risk</cite> for most healthy people.

The danger climbs sharply with concentrated capsules and powders, the kind sold in wellness shops promising joint relief, weight loss or “detox.”

Here is where the story stops being a simple villain narrative.

Laboratory and animal studies paint a strikingly different picture of curcumin, one where it acts as a guardian of kidney tissue.

Researchers studying curcumin in stone-induced rats found it <cite index=”1-1″>reduced oxidative stress damage in kidneys affected by stone formation</cite>, and separate mouse studies found it <cite index=”2-1″>had protective effects against calcium oxalate deposits and related renal injury</cite>.

Case researchers reviewing the American patient’s condition noted the irony directly: <cite index=”3-1″>while turmeric’s oxalate content poses a kidney risk, curcumin itself may help kidney cells recover by calming inflammation, mopping up damaging free radicals, and protecting cell function</cite>.

In short: the same molecule can be protector and provocateur, depending entirely on how much of it, and in what form, enters the body.

But you should be discerning. The emerging medical consensus, cautious as it is, draws a clear line between turmeric as a spice and turmeric as a supplement.

Sprinkling it into your stew is not the same as swallowing concentrated capsules daily for months.

Anyone with a personal history of kidney stones, reduced kidney function, or a family predisposition to them should treat high-dose turmeric or curcumin supplements the way they would any other concentrated compound, with medical guidance, not blind trust in the “natural” label.

Scientists studying the field agree on one thing above all: human trials on long-term supplement use remain thin, and more rigorous research is needed before turmeric’s kidney story is fully written.

Until then, the golden spice keeps its place on the table, just, perhaps, not in your medicine cabinet without a doctor’s nod.

The last thing I did before my no-makeup experiment was take a selfie with a full face on. Foundation, concealer, contour, highlight, the works. I looked at that photo for a long time before hitting delete.

I looked beautiful. I also looked nothing like me.

Why I Even Started This

Let me be clear: this isn’t an anti-makeup manifesto. I’m not here to convince you that makeup is bad or that natural is better.

This is about the fact that I genuinely couldn’t remember the last time I’d left my house without foundation.

Twenty-six years old, and I was already teaching my skin to be invisible.

It started innocently enough. A little concealer for dark circles in college. Then foundation for “special occasions.”

Then foundation for work. Then foundation for the grocery store. Then foundation for checking the mail.

By last year, I was doing a full face to take out the trash.

The breaking point wasn’t dramatic. I was running late for coffee with a friend, forgot to do my makeup, and spent the entire hour convinced she was staring at my acne scars.

When I got home and looked in the mirror, I realized something horrifying: I couldn’t remember what my actual face looked like anymore.

The First Week Was Hell

I’m not going to romanticize this. The first week of going makeup-free was one of the hardest things I’ve done.

I cried on day three. Not cute, delicate tears. Full-on sobbing in my car before walking into work, convinced everyone would notice, everyone would judge, everyone would finally see me as the fraud I believed I was.

Spoiler: almost no one noticed.

The few people who did said things like “You look fresh!” or “Did you get more sleep?” Not the horror and pity I’d imagined. The biggest reactions were all happening in my own head.

What I Noticed (The Uncomfortable Stuff)

Week 2: I caught myself apologizing for my face. “Sorry, I’m not wearing makeup today” became my automatic greeting, as if my bare face was an inconvenience I was inflicting on others.

Week 3: I realized how much mental energy I’d been spending on my appearance. Without the daily routine of makeup application, I had an extra 45 minutes every morning. I didn’t know what to do with myself.

Week 4: I went to a party and felt genuinely naked. Everyone else looked polished and put-together. I looked like I’d just rolled out of bed. I left early, went home, and questioned everything.

Week 5: I stopped checking my reflection every time I passed a mirror. Not because I loved what I saw, but because I was too exhausted to care anymore.

The Shift

Something changed around week eight.

I was having lunch with my sister when she said, “Your skin looks really good.” I laughed it off, but she insisted. “No, seriously. It’s glowing.”

I went home and actually looked at my face. Really looked. And she was right.

Without the daily cycle of makeup and harsh makeup removal, my skin was calmer. The redness had faded. My pores looked smaller. Even my acne scars seemed less angry.

But more than that, I looked like… me. Not a better version or a worse version. Just the actual version.

What Changed (Besides My Skin)

I started investing in skincare instead of coverage. The money I would’ve spent on foundation went toward a good vitamin C serum and retinol. I figured if I was going to see my skin every day, I might as well take care of it.

I discovered I have freckles. Actual freckles across my nose that I’d been covering up for years. They’re kind of cute. I’d forgotten they existed.

My morning routine became a ritual instead of a task. Cleanse, serum, moisturize, SPF. Five minutes of actually caring for my skin instead of 45 minutes of hiding it.

I stopped apologizing. Around month four, I noticed I’d stopped prefacing conversations with excuses about my bare face. This one was huge.

I learned to do “enough” makeup. This is important: I didn’t swear off makeup forever. I just learned to use it differently. Now, when I wear it, it’s because I want to, not because I’m afraid not to. Mascara and tinted lip balm for coffee dates. A little eyeshadow for fun. The full face for special occasions when I feel like it.

The Unexpected Side Effect

Here’s what I didn’t expect: going makeup-free changed how I saw other women.

I used to look at influencers and celebrities and friends and think “She’s so naturally beautiful.” Now I can spot the “no-makeup makeup” from a mile away. The concealer, the tinted moisturizer, the lash extensions, the brow lamination, the subtle contour.

There’s nothing wrong with any of that. But I’d been comparing my bare face to everyone else’s made-up face and wondering why I couldn’t measure up. No wonder I felt inadequate.

The Uncomfortable Truth

Six months in, and I still have days where I look in the mirror and don’t love what I see. My skin isn’t perfect. I still have texture, redness, the occasional breakout. My under-eye circles are very much still there.

But now, when I see those things, I see features instead of flaws.

The dark circles are from staying up talking to my best friend. The laugh lines are from actually laughing. The acne scars are proof that my skin has been through things and healed.

I’m not going to tell you that I “learned to love myself” or that I’m “finally confident.” That feels dishonest. Some days I still want to hide. Some days I still feel exposed.

But I’ve learned something more valuable than confidence: I’ve learned that my face doesn’t need to be perfect to be worthy of being seen.

What Happens Now

I’m still not wearing makeup most days. When I do, it’s playful. Experimental. Fun. A purple eyeliner here. A bold lip there. Glitter for no reason.

Makeup stopped being armor and started being art.

My skin still isn’t what magazines would call flawless. But it’s mine. And after 26 years of treating it like something that needed to be fixed, I’m finally just letting it exist.

If You’re Considering This

You don’t need to stop wearing makeup for six months. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone. But if you, like me, have forgotten what your actual face looks like, if you can’t leave the house without foundation, if you’re afraid people will see the “real you” and be disappointed—maybe try one day.

Just one day of showing up as you are.

You might surprise yourself.

Black tea with lemon may look like a simple, everyday drink, but inside your body, it sets off a fascinating chain of reactions. From boosting digestion to sharpening mental alertness, this classic combination blends ancient wellness wisdom with modern science. Here’s what really happens when black tea meets a splash of lemon.

In a fast-paced Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, a quiet revolution is unfolding in how Kenyans approach daily life, wellness, and personal growth.

More people are embracing routines that balance career demands, family, and mental health, a trend experts say reflects a growing awareness of holistic well-being.

Take Wanjiru Kamau, a 32-year-old tech professional in Nairobi.

She starts her day with a 20-minute mindfulness session followed by a light breakfast of fresh fruit and porridge before heading to work.

“I realized that my mornings were always rushed, leaving me anxious and stressed. Since I introduced meditation and a proper breakfast, my focus and energy have improved dramatically,” she says.

Fitness routines are also evolving. Urban residents are blending traditional workouts with lifestyle activities like weekend hikes in Karura Forest, cycling along the Nairobi Expressway, or joining community yoga groups in Mombasa.

Gyms report a 30% rise in people seeking classes that combine physical activity with mindfulness and stress management.

Nutrition is another focal point.

With rising awareness of health and wellness, Kenyan urbanites are shifting from processed foods to local, organic options.

Markets now feature fresh produce, cold-pressed juices, and gluten-free options to support healthier lifestyles. Chef Samuel Ochieng, who runs a plant-based café in Westlands, notes:

“People are no longer eating just to fill their stomachs; they are thinking about nutrition, energy levels, and mental clarity. Even traditional dishes are being reinvented in healthier ways.”

Mental health, once a taboo subject, is gaining attention too.

Online communities, wellness apps, and corporate programs are helping Kenyans incorporate self-care into their daily lives.

Psychologist Dr. Faith Nyambura observes: “There is a cultural shift where people are realizing that mental health is as important as physical health. Meditation, journaling, and therapy are no longer luxuries but essential practices for a balanced life.”

Technology plays a pivotal role in this lifestyle shift.

From fitness trackers to meditation apps, urban Kenyans are leveraging digital tools to track sleep, monitor stress, and maintain wellness routines.

Social media influencers are also promoting sustainable living, fitness challenges, and plant-based diets, further influencing trends.

Despite the progress, challenges remain.

Many Kenyans still face time constraints, financial limitations, and cultural barriers when adopting new routines.

Yet the trend toward mindful living, fitness integration, and nutrition awareness signals a positive transformation in urban lifestyles.

“Small changes make a big difference,” Wanjiru says.

“Even a 10-minute morning stretch or swapping sugary snacks for fruit has improved my energy and mood.”

As Kenyans continue to juggle busy schedules with personal well-being, experts believe the future of lifestyle in Kenya is heading toward a blend of modern wellness practices, traditional culture, and community-driven habits, proving that a balanced life is not a luxury, but a lifestyle worth cultivating.

In the world of superfoods, one green gem continues to shine quietly on our plates Okra, also known as lady’s finger.

From African farms to global kitchens, this humble vegetable is earning new respect as a powerhouse of nutrition, healing, and culinary versatility.

For generations, okra has been a staple in African, Asian, and Caribbean cuisines. Whether stewed, fried, grilled, or added to soups, it brings a unique texture and mild flavor loved by many.

But beyond its taste, science is now confirming what our grandparents always knew, okra is medicine on a plate.

Rich in vitamin C, magnesium, antioxidants, and dietary fiber, okra helps support digestion, immunity, and heart health.

The slimy mucilage that many avoid?

That’s actually its superpower!

It helps soothe the digestive tract, lower cholesterol, and even regulate blood sugar, making it a friend to those managing diabetes.

Researchers are discovering that okra’s compounds may reduce inflammation, protect against oxidative stress, and promote better gut health.

The seeds, too, contain plant-based protein and beneficial oils, ideal for vegetarians and health-conscious eaters.

Nutritionists call okra a “green shield” for the body. It protects, heals, and nourishes naturally.

Drinking okra water, a new wellness trend, has become popular for detoxification and hydration benefits.

In Kenya and across Africa, smallholder farmers are turning to okra as a climate-resilient crop.

It thrives in hot, dry conditions where other vegetables struggle, offering both food security and income.

Agronomists believe okra could be part of the continent’s answer to sustainable nutrition and agricultural resilience.

Okra is more than a vegetable, it’s an opportunity,” says Dr. Jane Mwangi, a nutrition expert in Nairobi.

“It’s local, affordable, and incredibly rich in nutrients. Every home garden should have a few okra plants.”

“It’s local, affordable, and incredibly rich in nutrients. Every home garden should have a few okra plants.”

Beyond health, okra is versatile in the kitchen.

From spicy stews to crispy fritters, or even as a thickener in soups and sauces, it adapts to every palate.

Food enthusiasts are now giving it a gourmet twist, roasted okra chips, okra smoothies, and even okra-based skincare products are hitting the market.

As consumers shift toward plant-based diets and natural wellness, okra’s moment has arrived.

It’s not just a vegetable; it’s a symbol of balance, between tradition and modernity, nourishment and sustainability.

Next time you pass by the green pods at the market, don’t overlook them.

Inside those slender fingers lies a secret of vitality, a reminder that sometimes, the most powerful health boosters grow quietly in our backyard.

Okra truly is the Green Gem of Wellness, nature’s gift to good health.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly condemned what he described as a calculated scheme by the government to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome from office, claiming that the move is part of a broader agenda to silence dissent and dismantle the judiciary in preparation for manipulating the upcoming general elections.

Gachagua, speaking at a church service held at PCEA Imenti North Presbytery in Meru County, rallied behind Koome, urging the government to halt any efforts to oust her.

He argued that the Chief Justice’s firm stance against impunity has made her a target of political forces intent on eroding Kenya’s democratic institutions.

“The state is targeting Chief Justice Martha Koome for one simple reason her unwavering stand against impunity.

Her voice in the judiciary is crucial for upholding the rule of law, and they want to silence her,” Gachagua said, adding that the alleged plot to remove Koome is just the latest part of a systematic strategy to weaken the judiciary.

Gachagua also linked the alleged removal of Koome to the wider political landscape, claiming that the initial move was to remove him from office, and now the government seeks to eliminate the Chief Justice to pave the way for rigging the upcoming elections.

“This is a well-calculated scheme. First, they targeted me, now they want to remove the Chief Justice, and soon, they’ll come after the entire judiciary. This is all part of their plan to prepare for electoral fraud,” he asserted, his voice laden with concern.

The former Deputy President expressed strong support for Chief Justice Koome, urging her not to be intimidated.

“CJ Koome, stand firm. Don’t let them intimidate you. The people of Kenya are with you,” he added, his words resonating with the gathered crowd.

Gachagua further appealed to the international community to pay close attention to the situation in Kenya.

He claimed that the government had already captured the legislature and the executive, and was now moving swiftly to control the judiciary, which would result in a dangerous imbalance of power.

“The international community must keep a keen eye on Kenya. We need the world to see what is happening here. The state has already captured the legislature and the executive, and now they are moving to capture the judiciary. This is the moment for global solidarity to prevent Kenya from slipping into authoritarianism,” Gachagua urged.

On the political dynamics within Kenya’s central region, Gachagua addressed the issue of unity in the mountain, which has been a subject of tension within the political sphere.

He alleged that President William Ruto’s attempts to divide the region had been thwarted, and the residents of the area remained united.

“The unity of the Mountain is non-negotiable. The attempt by President Ruto and his allies to divide us has failed. We stand together, and we will continue to stand together for the sake of our people and our country,” Gachagua stated emphatically.

Accompanying Gachagua at the service was his wife, Pastor Dorcas Gachagua, as well as local and national leaders who joined him in delivering his strong message.

The event, attended by a large congregation, was marked by fervent prayers and expressions of solidarity, particularly towards the Chief Justice.

Gachagua’s remarks come at a time when tensions within the political and judicial spheres continue to rise.

With the general elections fast approaching, all eyes remain on Kenya as the nation grapples with issues of governance, judicial independence, and political integrity.

Their seamless integration into local society, while staying connected to their roots, speaks volumes about their commitment and optimism,” said Wetang’ula.

As part of his two-day official visit, Wetang’ula commended the community’s efforts to uplift Kenya’s profile internationally and invest in their home country.

He reaffirmed the Kenyan government’s commitment to supporting its diaspora, citing it as a key pillar of national growth and foreign policy.

“When I served as Foreign Minister, I championed the diaspora as key ambassadors for Kenya. You continue to represent and market Kenya on the global stage, and your contributions directly align with our national development strategy,” Wetang’ula noted.

The Speaker was warmly received by Ms. Catherine Wanyoike, Chairperson of the Kenyan Community in Guernsey, who expressed her gratitude for Wetang’ula’s visit.

She also took the opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by the diaspora, particularly in securing long-term visas that would facilitate deeper integration and sustainable development.

Wetang’ula assured the community that their concerns, especially regarding visa policies and integration issues, would be addressed.

“We will work closely with the Kenyan Mission in London to ensure that these challenges are resolved,” he promised.

Amb. Catherine Karemu, Kenya’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, also pledged support for the community, underscoring her office’s commitment to facilitating the Kenyan diaspora’s welfare in Guernsey.

“This engagement underscores the Government of Kenya’s unwavering support for its citizens abroad,” Wetang’ula concluded.

“The contributions of the Kenyan diaspora are invaluable to the nation, and we are committed to fostering stronger ties and enhancing opportunities for investment and growth both here and at home.”

The discussions also centered on ways to improve collaboration between Kenya and its diaspora, ensuring more robust support systems and policies to address their needs and enhance their success abroad.

Accompanying the Speaker on this visit were Mr. Jeremiah Ndombi, Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly, and Mr. Benson Milimo, Chief of Staff in the Speaker’s Office.

This engagement marks a significant step in deepening Kenya’s diplomatic ties with its expatriate communities, reinforcing their role in the country’s development and global presence.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused the government of orchestrating the violence that broke out at a funeral in Limuru on Thursday, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was present.

Kalonzo made the claim during a media briefing on Saturday, condemning the incident as a state-sponsored act of terrorism aimed at disrupting the peaceful gathering and stifling political opposition.

The incident occurred in Bibironi village, where mourners had gathered for a funeral.

Kalonzo asserted that the individuals responsible for the chaos had one clear objective: to cause destruction and prevent attendees from engaging with the mourners.

He dismissed official explanations from the police, including those from Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin, who suggested that the violence was due to a lack of intelligence.

According to Kalonzo, the evidence was undeniable—this was a deliberate, state-backed attack, possibly involving abductions.

Kalonzo also emphasized the wider implications of such violence, stating that an attack on one Kenyan is an attack on the entire nation, regardless of race, ethnicity, or political affiliation.

He condemned the abduction of any citizen, framing it as an attack on the principles of a free and democratic society.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also weighed in on the violence, asserting that the government played a role in the attack.

He described how a group of individuals followed him as he left the funeral, pelting his vehicle with stones and iron bars.

Gachagua expressed his deep disappointment, accusing the state of complicity in the incident.

He recounted how he was forced to leave the venue under a barrage of stones.
