Busia County Governor Paul Otuoma has recorded a statement with investigating authorities over allegations of irregular procurement worth KSh 1.4 billion, sources close to the investigation confirmed.

The governor appeared before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives following mounting concerns about questionable tender awards and procurement processes within the county government.

The probe centers on several major contracts awarded between 2022 and 2024, including road construction projects, medical equipment supplies, and county infrastructure development.

According to documents seen by investigators, the procurement irregularities involve inflated project costs, non-competitive tendering processes, and payments made to suppliers who allegedly failed to deliver goods and services.

Some contracts were reportedly awarded to companies linked to county officials and their associates.

Governor Otuoma, who took office in 2022, has maintained his innocence, stating that his administration has operated within the law and followed all due procurement procedures.

“I have cooperated fully with the investigators and provided all the documentation they requested. We have nothing to hide,” the governor said in a brief statement after recording his statement.

The investigation has also roped in several county officials, including members of the procurement committee, finance officers, and heads of various departments.

At least six county employees have already been questioned, with some asked to provide documents detailing how specific tenders were awarded.

The probe follows complaints from contractors and civil society groups who raised concerns about the transparency of procurement processes in the county.

Auditor General reports had also flagged several procurement irregularities in Busia County over the past two financial years.

EACC spokesman confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that more individuals could be summoned to assist with inquiries.

The commission has emphasized that no one will be spared if found culpable of corruption or economic crimes.

Busia County Assembly members have called for transparency in the investigations and urged all implicated officials to cooperate with authorities.

The assembly’s Public Accounts Committee has also launched its own inquiry into the procurement concerns.

If charges are preferred and convictions secured, those found guilty could face hefty fines, jail terms, and disqualification from holding public office under Kenya’s anti-corruption laws.

The investigation continues as authorities seek to recover any public funds that may have been lost through the alleged irregular procurement processes.

Nyamira County has taken a significant step toward improving maternal and child healthcare through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding with Lwala Community Health Alliance.

Governor Amos Nyaribo and Lwala’s Chief Executive Officer Julius Mbeya formalized the partnership aimed at reducing preventable deaths among mothers and children across the county.

The collaboration will leverage Lwala’s proven community-based hospital model to mentor and train community health workers throughout Nyamira County.

These frontline healthcare providers will be equipped with enhanced skills and knowledge to identify high-risk pregnancies, provide timely interventions, and ensure proper referrals when necessary.

Under the partnership framework, Lwala Community Health Alliance will serve as the primary technical partner, sharing best practices and methodologies that have demonstrated success in reducing mortality rates in similar rural settings.

The organization’s community-led approach emphasizes preventive care, early detection of complications, and strengthening the link between communities and health facilities.

Community health workers will undergo comprehensive training programs focusing on maternal nutrition, safe delivery practices, newborn care, and recognition of danger signs requiring immediate medical attention. The initiative also includes plans to improve supply chains for essential medicines and medical equipment at the grassroots level.

The model community-based hospital will act as a learning center where health workers can receive hands-on training and ongoing mentorship.

This approach ensures that knowledge transfer is practical and sustainable, creating a lasting impact on healthcare delivery systems within the county.

Nyamira County has faced persistent challenges with maternal and child mortality, with many deaths occurring due to delays in seeking care, inadequate skilled attendance during delivery, and limited access to emergency obstetric services.

The partnership addresses these gaps by strengthening the community health system and empowering local health workers.

The MOU outlines clear timelines for implementation, monitoring and evaluation frameworks, and resource allocation strategies.

Both parties have committed to regular progress assessments to ensure the partnership achieves its intended outcomes.

This collaboration represents a significant investment in preventive healthcare and community empowerment. By focusing on capacity building at the grassroots level, the partnership aims to create sustainable change that will benefit generations of Nyamira families.

The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other counties seeking to address similar healthcare challenges through community-based approaches.

A senior secondary school student allegedly died on Tuesday afternoon after being disciplined by a local chief in Tipis Location, Njoro Sub‑County, Nakuru County, police and community members confirm.

The deceased has been identified as Joel Ngugi Ngigi, a Form Four student who was reportedly taken from his home by the chief for disciplinary action.

Hours later, his lifeless body was found, sparking shock and outrage in the community.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts circulating on social media and being verified by local authorities, the chief, whose identity has not yet been publicly disclosed, took Ngigi from his family compound under the pretext of chastisement.

A post shared on an Instagram page reporting on the incident alleges that the youth was disciplined and subsequently found dead shortly after.

Police in Nakuru have since launched an investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the boy’s death, with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) expected to interview family members, neighbours, and the chief involved.

An initial report from the scene indicated that Ngigi was picked up alive but returned to the community dead, prompting widespread condemnation.

Residents have called for a thorough and transparent probe into whether excessive force was used during the alleged discipline.

Family members, still in a state of shock, told reporters that they had not been informed of any formal action against the boy before his disappearance.

“We were told only that he had been taken by the chief. We never expected this,” one relative said, requesting anonymity.

The autopsy is scheduled to be conducted today at Egerton Funeral Home, which is expected to determine whether the boy died of natural causes, injury consistent with assault, or other factors.

In recent months, several deaths involving young people have sparked public debate about discipline and accountability, including cases where students died under disputed circumstances and families demanded answers from authorities.

Local leaders in Njoro have appealed for calm as investigations continue.

The Area OCPD said police are taking the matter seriously and vowed to bring clarity to what happened.

“We urge residents to remain peaceful. We are conducting a full inquiry and will share findings once established,” the officer said in a brief statement.

Human rights advocates have already called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Children’s Department to join the probe to ensure that the rights of minors are protected and that any official found culpable is held to account.

As the investigation unfolds, the community of Tipis Location remains tense, with many residents demanding justice for the young life lost under unclear and troubling circumstances.

Hours after President Dr. William Samoei Ruto approved the renaming of Talanta International Stadium, the County Government of Kisumu has expressed profound gratitude for the historic decision, officially immortalizing Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga.

In a statement issued by the Office of the Governor, Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o described the move as a historical act and a deeply fitting tribute to a leader whose life was dedicated to the fight for democracy, justice, and the soul of Kenya.

The soon-to-be-completed stadium, with a seating capacity of 60,000, will now be known as Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium, ensuring that Odinga’s “story, sacrifice, and values are immortalized into the consciousness of every future generation of Kenyans,” the Governor noted.

Governor Nyong’o highlighted Raila Odinga’s lifelong advocacy, saying:

“The Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga’s struggle for the Second Liberation, the 2010 Constitution, and his lifelong advocacy for devolution are foundational pillars of modern Kenya.”

Describing the symbolic importance of the stadium, the Governor said: “A stadium is a place of aspiration, unity, and national pride. By attaching the name of ‘Baba’ to this colossal structure, we are sending a powerful message that the spirit of struggle for human rights and political tolerance are central to the Kenyan identity.”

The stadium, according to the statement, will not only serve as a venue for sports but also as a perpetual monument to a Prime Minister who always put country before self.

It is intended to inspire both athletes and artists, reminding them of the heights one can reach through tenacity and belief in the people.

Governor Nyong’o concluded by urging Kenyans to celebrate the historic gesture:

“I urge all Kenyans to embrace this historic decision in the spirit of togetherness and national cohesion.”

The official opening of the Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium is eagerly anticipated, with celebrations expected to highlight the spirit of national pride and unity.

Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera has urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch an immediate probe into the mysterious abduction of Munyuki High School Principal, Simon Isiaho Shange, who disappeared nearly a week ago.

Speaking through his lawyer Danstan Omari, Nabwera appealed to DCI boss Mohammed Amin to “move with speed and establish the whereabouts” of the missing principal, who was allegedly abducted shortly after being involved in a road accident on November 3, 2025.

“The Principal has not been seen in Lugari Constituency for six days now. His family and colleagues are deeply worried as he has not communicated with anyone since the day of his disappearance,” said Mr. Omari during a press briefing in Nairobi.

According to Omari, witnesses reported that soon after the accident, unknown individuals whisked away the principal to an undisclosed location.

The lawyer further revealed that his client has been linked to the incident by bloggers, whom he now accuses of defamation.

“We have written to three individuals, Peter Amunga, George Opunga Tamata, and Simon Asievela, demanding they immediately pull down defamatory posts on X (formerly Twitter) alleging that the MP was involved in the abduction,” Omari stated.

He said failure to comply will see the MP demand KSh 20 million in damages from each of the bloggers.

“If they do not retract and apologize, we will file a defamation suit claiming KSh 20 million from each of them on behalf of Hon. Nabwera,” Omari warned.

Omari confirmed that he had officially written to the DCI seeking urgent investigations into the abduction, noting that the matter has caused public anxiety in the constituency.

“This is not a political issue, it’s a serious matter of human rights and personal safety. We want the DCI to get to the bottom of it,” he said.

The MP, who is currently in the United Kingdom attending a parliamentary conference, has reportedly maintained communication with his legal team and security agencies from abroad.

“My client has nothing to hide. He only wants the truth to come out and the principal safely found,” Omari affirmed.

As investigations continue, police are yet to issue an official statement on the missing school head’s whereabouts.

For over four decades, Amboseli National Park has stood as a symbol of Kenya’s wildlife heritage, drawing tourists from across the globe to marvel at its vast plains, iconic elephant herds, and the towering presence of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Established in 1974, the park had long been managed by the National Government, ensuring conservation and tourism development at a national level.

In a historic move aimed at decentralizing wildlife management, the National Government has officially transferred management functions of the world-famous park to the County Government of Kajiado.

The transition was formalized on October 14, 2025, through a deed of transfer published in Gazette Notice No. 15230.

The Deed of Transfer, signed by the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife on behalf of the National Government and the Governor of Kajiado County, outlines the terms under which the county will assume full responsibility for the park’s management, conservation, and development activities.

“This transfer is a landmark step in empowering counties to manage their local natural resources while ensuring sustainable conservation practices,” said the Cabinet Secretary.

“It reflects our commitment to devolving governance and enhancing community participation in wildlife management.”

Amboseli National Park, renowned for its breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and its large elephant herds, has historically been managed at the national level.

Under the new arrangement, Kajiado County will oversee administrative functions, local tourism promotion, community engagement, and conservation initiatives within the park.

The County Government of Kajiado welcomed the transition, emphasizing the benefits of local management.

“This is a historic moment for Kajiado County. We now have the opportunity to directly manage one of Kenya’s most iconic parks, ensuring that local communities benefit while protecting our wildlife heritage,” said the Governor.

Gazette Notice No. 15230, also referred to as the Deed of Transfer, now legally confirms the county’s authority over Amboseli National Park, marking a new chapter in the management and conservation of Kenya’s natural heritage.

Nyeri politician Purity Karaya is reeling from shock and grief after discovering that one of the victims of a tragic road accident she had rushed to assist on Sunday night was her own cousin.

The accident, which occurred along the busy Kenol–Marua highway at Bantu Africa, involved a Kasamuthi Sacco matatu.

Several passengers lost their lives in the crash, while others were left with serious injuries.

Karaya, who was on her way home, said she witnessed the horrific scene unfold and immediately stopped to help the victims despite the absence of emergency services.

“It was a very bad accident. I stopped because there was no ambulance and people were crying out for help. I had to call Ken Nduati to come and assist since the situation was dire,” she told reporters.

But the tragedy struck closer to home than she could have imagined.

Hours later, Karaya said she received a shattering call from her mother.

“One of the people who died in that accident was your own cousin,” her mother told her in a trembling voice.

The revelation left Karaya devastated.

“I’m really traumatized,” she said, her eyes welling with tears.

“It is one thing to witness strangers suffering, but another to learn that your own blood was among the dead. My heart is broken.”

The emotional weight of the loss has not only shaken Karaya but also her family and the broader Nyeri community.

Residents who know her described the accident as a grim reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for improved emergency response along Kenya’s major highways.

Police have confirmed the crash and indicated that investigations into its cause are underway.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Nyeri County Referral Hospital morgue, while survivors are receiving treatment at nearby health facilities.

Chief Justice Martha Koome has launched a major justice reform milestone in Garissa County, unveiling the Al-Islaah Alternative Justice Centre, the Garissa County AJS Model, and the County AJS Action Plan, initiatives designed to bring justice closer to communities through traditional, faith-based, and local mechanisms.

Addressing elders, community leaders, and justice stakeholders during the launch event, CJ Koome hailed the initiative as a transformative approach to resolving disputes peacefully and inclusively.

“The term Al-Islaah, meaning ‘reconciliation’ in Arabic, captures the spirit of this centre,” said the Chief Justice.

“It will be a place where the wisdom of elders, the moral authority of religious leaders, and the knowledge of trained mediators converge to offer citizens solutions that heal relationships rather than deepen divisions.”

CJ Koome emphasized that justice should not be confined to formal courtrooms, especially in counties like Garissa, where long-standing traditions, religious norms, and local realities offer effective avenues for dispute resolution.

“Garissa, with its rich Somali traditions, strong religious heritage, and unique cross-border realities, has always known that justice cannot be confined to the four walls of a courtroom. Justice must live in the community, in the baraza, in the mosque, and in the council of elders,” she noted.

The Garissa AJS Model, launched alongside the Justice Centre, brings together three complementary streams: autonomous systems such as elder and religious councils, court-annexed AJS panels, and state-linked actors including Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs.

CJ Koome described this as a “multi-door approach to justice”, designed to empower citizens with options that are accessible, affordable, and aligned with human rights.

“Together, these streams form a multi-door approach to justice, an approach that allows citizens to choose from multiple avenues of redress depending on their needs, while ensuring that human rights, dignity, and constitutional values are upheld,” she said.

Highlighting the practical benefits of the AJS model, CJ Koome pointed out its role in de-escalating community tensions and preventing cycles of violence, particularly in areas prone to land disputes and cross-border conflict.

“By empowering elders, religious leaders, and community actors to resolve disputes early and fairly, we reduce the risk of violence, strengthen social cohesion, and give our young people a future free from cycles of revenge and retaliation,” she said.

The Chief Justice also stressed the need for inclusion in AJS processes, urging practitioners to uphold gender equity and the rights of vulnerable populations.

“Let us ensure that justice under AJS respects constitutional values and protects the vulnerable, particularly women and children,” CJ Koome urged.

Garissa Governor Nathif Jama welcomed the Chief Justice’s visit and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting and expanding AJS mechanisms across the county.

“Today we are honored to host the Chief Justice in Garissa. Our partnership in championing the AJS model demonstrates our shared vision of making justice simple, affordable, and closer to the people,” said Governor Jama.

“This initiative will strengthen peace, cohesion, and accountability in our communities.”

He also announced plans to devolve AJS Suites to the sub-county level, ensuring that traditional conflict resolution is available even in remote areas.

Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Winfridah Mokaya underscored the symbolic importance of launching the Al-Islaah Centre in Garissa, noting the region’s strong foundation in elder councils, Islamic justice traditions, and grassroots reconciliation.

“The launch of the AJS Suite here is therefore not just a programme milestone, but also a recognition of this region’s strong culture of community-driven justice,” Mokaya said.

She called for increased investment in justice across both formal and informal systems.

“Building modern courts, supporting mobile courts, and strengthening AJS mechanisms are not separate agendas—they are complementary pathways that expand the doorways of justice,” she added.

“Whether a Kenyan seeks resolution before a Judge in a High Court, a Kadhi in a family matter, or elders through AJS, justice must be accessible, trusted, and within reach.”

With the launch of its AJS County Action Plan, Garissa becomes the 12th county in Kenya to formally implement an Alternative Justice System framework, a major step toward realizing Article 159(2)(c) of the Constitution, which mandates the promotion of traditional dispute resolution mechanisms.

CJ Koome concluded her visit by reaffirming the Judiciary’s dedication to people-centered justice, rooted not only in law but also in cultural wisdom and communal harmony.

A tense political drama is unfolding after Members of the Kericho County Assembly (MCAs) accused some senators of being bribed, allegedly with over Sh50 million, to prevent the impeachment of Governor Erick Mutai.

MCAs backing the impeachment claim that substantial sums changed hands in the Senate just before the impeachment vote last week on Friday.

While no formal evidence or detailed accounts have been publicly presented, these allegations have added a layer of suspicion to an already sensitive political ordeal.

Governor Mutai escaped removal from office twice, both times on procedural grounds in the Senate.

The first impeachment attempt unfolded in October 2024, when the county assembly, amid a heated vote, held that 31 of 47 MCAs supported the motion, just shy of the two-thirds threshold required by law.

In a significant development, Governor Mutai’s legal team successfully raised a preliminary objection arguing that the motion lacked the necessary numerical backing.

The Senate sided with this argument: 34 senators upheld the procedure objection, compared to 10 who opposed it, resulting in the termination of the impeachment hearing

Fast forward to August 2025, and Mutai faced a second impeachment bid.

Over three tense days, senators debated whether the County Assembly had legitimately met the threshold.

In a narrow but emphatic move, the Senate concluded that it had not.

Twenty-six senators voted that the threshold was not met, 16 disagreed, and one abstained, prompting Senate Speaker Amason Kingi to terminate the proceedings once again

During the second hearing, Governor Mutai’s defense raised severe doubts about the electronic voting system used by the MCAs.

Though 33 votes were logged in favor of impeachment, the governor questioned the integrity of the process, alleging the system was vulnerable and improperly used.

Although an ICT Authority expert confirmed the system’s security, the doubts cast helped sway the Senate.

The grounds for the impeachment itself were deeply serious.

The MCAs accused Mutai of misappropriating county funds, including fictitious payments totaling Sh85 million and misuse of donor funds, particularly the Sh351 million allocated under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Programme (NAVCDP).

Other charges included abuse of office, illegal dismissals, and gross misconduct.

Nairobi’s long-standing battle with solid waste management is finally seeing a turnaround, thanks to Governor Johnson Sakaja’s ambitious and structured approach.

For years, the city’s waste sector was fragmented and heavily commercialised, resulting in persistent cleanliness challenges.

But under Governor Sakaja’s leadership, Nairobi has embraced a strategy built on three key pillars: manpower, equipment, and resources.

At the centre of this transformation is the Green Army, a dedicated workforce of over 4,000 young Nairobians employed to clean, manage waste, and beautify the city.

Remarkably, most of these workers have been confirmed into permanent, pensionable roles, the largest recruitment in the environmental sector since 1987.

Governor Sakaja emphasized, “Our Green Army is not just a workforce; it is a movement towards sustainable cleanliness and dignity for every Nairobi resident.”

Supporting this manpower boost is a significant investment in modern equipment.

The county has acquired 10 skip loaders with 50 skips, 27 tippers, and 24 refuse compactors.

This new fleet is being strategically deployed in high-traffic areas like markets and estates to enhance waste collection efficiency.

To further encourage responsible waste disposal, Nairobi now boasts 900 new litter bins installed across the city.

Ensuring the long-term success of these initiatives, Governor Sakaja has set up the Green Nairobi Company, a fully autonomous body tasked with overseeing solid waste management with corporate efficiency and public accountability.

“This company will drive operational excellence while keeping the community’s interests at heart,” Sakaja noted.

In addition, the county plans to collaborate with private partners to bolster capacity and maintain uninterrupted waste collection services.

Governor Sakaja’s vision is unequivocal: “The city must be clean, and we are committed to making Nairobi a cleaner, healthier, and more dignified capital for all its residents.”
